Re: MPG Average, what's the best...
Hi Guys (And gals!),
I have been struggling but love my X Type too much to give up.
I believe the average mile per gallon for my X Type 2.5 sport (automatic petrol) is anything between 18 to 37mpg and I think that's a conservative estimate!!
What in your experience is the best speed to average on say dual carriageways, and motorways (maximum speed 70mph), as I am not convinced 70mph is the best for economy, I'd love your thoughts on this as I occassionally stick to 60mph but I feel a distinct under-performer and since I drive a Jag should I just floor it and feel the crunch on my wallet later at the pumps? Yoiks!
Regards, Stu

Been a long while for my X type 2.5 but I seem to remember getting around the 20 mpg - 23 mpg or thereabouts......not great.
Audi A6 diesel now you see Stuart and average around 39 stop / start around town.
On motorways I generally see around mid to high 40's maybe a little more. The absolute best while hypermiling almost saw me get 64.1mpg and 795.5 miles to a full tank.
As much as I'm desperate for a 4.2 or 5.0 litre XKR I don't see one in my future anytime soon at todays fuel prices...lol

Hi Stu and thanks for all your thanks over the many threads..much appreciated buddy!
Anyway..When I bought my 03 X 3.0L New, and drove it home none stop from Sarasota Florida to Oklahoma City...I used Shell premium, 91 octane or more (US calculated)...and averaged 27 MPG..After that, I averaged with city driving/mixed, about 22 MPG down to 18 MPG...

Stuart, I have managed to get as high as 32 MPG (US gallons) out of my car. The first time it happened I was about floored with excitement. But, that was a day of traveling from Maryland to Upstate NY (Syracuse area) on I-83 and the likes. I was cruising along at about 70 mph. I also find that when I do a trip from southern Maryland up to Baltimore and use the Baltimore-Washington Expressway (limited access road), my mileage always seems to be a bit better.
Now, why is that? My feeling is this car likes to get to a speed and stay there. Going up and down in speed hurts the mileage. Stop and go just kills it. Another thing that I have noticed with my car is that I will see a slight up-tick in the mileage when switching between brands. That first tank always seems to net a little bit more. I also find that my car loves it hot. I get about 2-3 MPG more between a 70 degree day and a 95 degree day.

My wife is running Premium 91/92 octane in her X-type 2.5 and on her daily commute runs through several speed limit areas, 50, 70, 45, and 65 mph. The longest stretch is probably the 65 mph section. She is averaging 23 mpg right now. I wish it was better but hey, I'd say it is acceptable for a car that size.

Thank you gentlemen,
I am in awe of this car (2.5 Automatic and I also hear from you guys the 3.0L and the manual variations are liked as much!) and I am not in a hurry to change. The tips are good and it we always have much in common due to the similarities, now much as I hate to admit it (and I curse myself!) I have been stocking up at whoever is the cheapest of the supermarkets and I wonder if there is a slight gain in using the premium fuels albeit at a higher price? I indeed reckon there is a difference but how much, after all it is a conspiracy isn't it? Mind you in the supermarket in Perth today, I counted 5 X types and 5 elsewhere around town (when I get out to play!!) Obviously I need to "get out more!"
For all you fellas, I say a resounding thank you!!! Plus there is still an amazing lack of MPG regarding my X Type, and several of yours and I find it unbelievable to accept that some of you are getting MPG up to the mid thirties and higher and I am getting close to 22-27? Is it purely the temperature/climate of warmer, drier states/countries or is there more to it than that, mind you, I am a strong believer in the well serviced maintained car will return a greater output, but ahem am I right? I really don't know. And i am using fuel cleaners as well, are they any good to go regarding better fuel economy? Thanks! Stu

I have only one data point, from just local driving with some highway. My result was 18.8 miles per (US) gallon. Correcting to Imperial Gallons gives 23.5, which does seem to fall in line.
I presume that a trip consisting of mostly highway travel would improve that.
Note: Just noticed that I was posting in X-Type. Perhaps my results aren't relevant here. Sorry.

But RCG, you and all the members are welcome on this wonderful freely expressive and informative site, that's what it's all about and hey the XJ may be my next car and come to think of it, if it's Jaguar, any model, any age, any style, any era, modern or classic or size then dammit count me in....
