reliability
Hi, all: thinking about getting the wifey a mid size sedan. the budget is less than 19k. we come up with a list of cars we will consider, Jag X-type, Volvo S60, Ford Fusion, Mitsubishi Gallant, Subaru Legacy. We have not any test drive. We are just in thining stage. We did not pick toyota, honda, nissan. Just too common. too many on the road. 2003/2004 X-type and 2003 S60 are her top choices. I really like the X-type look. My main concern is its reliability. I've been digging around on the net for X-type info. It seems to me there is a wide spread quality problem with X-type, like vent won't stay shut, rust.... It will be her daily driving car. I don't want to get her stranded on highway all the time. How's your experience?
Thanks

RE: reliability
Had mine 19 months.Only 1 problem with speed sensor ring coming off which was replaced free under warranty (£149 total cost). My LH (UK passenger side) dash vent has popped up but its a very easy 2 minute fix.Performance is good and the AWD is awesome.I have owned probably 30 cars in the last 22 years and the X Type is the only car I have driven that gives the feeling of safety especially when travelling in heavy rain when other cars are slowing right down mine keeps plodding straight past them and feels solid and very sure footed which means I am relaxed when I get to my destination.Travelled 1850 mile round trip to France in July and it never put a foot wrong. When I have had other cars I always used to fancy trying something else next time. Now I will always buy Jags and especially the X Type for as long as they are available.More roomy than the S type too.We have repaired a few X types at our bodyshop and they are solid. One bloke drove into the back of a Vauxhall Corsa and stoved the back end of it in.Needed a new rear panel, bumper, rear bumper support. His X type on the other hand only had a cracked number plate plinth.Go on YouTube and watch some of the X Type videos especially on how sure footed they are in the snow (like when motoring journalist Jeremy Clarkson races an Olympic downhill skiier down a mountain and beats the guy).
Do the right thing..get the X type

RE: reliability
If you look at the published information, the reliability does improve after the facelift at 2004.5MY. The 2005MY is essentially the same but with different standard interior trim options, and 2005 initial quality ratings were excellent.
So I shopped around for a 2004.5MY car (sold as a 2004 and so cheaper than a 2005). You can tell if it is a 2004.5MY car by looking at the steering wheel - it has the buttons positioned on the spar instead of by the side of the airbag/horn moulding - or if my description is unclear, compare a 2002 with a 2005 picture on Ebay and you'll see.
As for your shortlist - look at posting "considering new X type - thoughts? that I've pulled back to the top of the pile. It covers most points but lets see:
Mitsubishi Gallant - I've not driven one of these in a while. MMC are usually well engineered but are very Japanese. I'd be more worried about Mitsubishi disappearing - their market share has droppped dramatically as a result of no new product and they are an endangered species according to the World Wildlife Fund.... I suppose they might be cheap secondhand as a result (I've not looked).
Subaru legacy - at last a Japanese car company with a bit of character (well their engines are, if not thier interior trim). They consistantly top the charts in customer satisfaction (in Europe at least) and have a strong loyal customer base that repeat purchase. I find them to be a bit quirky and "worthy" rather than inspiring.
