Relocating Climate Control Unit
For a while now I have been contemplating the potential for a complete overhaul to the multimedia system in my X.
They now have mobile broadband in my area for a reasonable monthly fee so I figured why not take advantage of that service.
It took a while but I managed to find a 10" touch-screen LCD (w/ vga port) that will be a perfect fit for the center console and driven by a Mac mini. However, it would require that I relocate the climate control unit (preferably to the glove box).
I plan to discard of the radio and cd player.
I was just wondering if anyone here has played with the cables powering the climate control unit and if there is potential to extend the harness into the glove box and if they believe this would be a straight forward procedure?
The relocation of the climate control unit is really the only thing holding me back so any information would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Relocating Climate Control Unit
There shouldnt be any problem relocating it. The harness will possibly reach into the box, if not, cut the harness, one wire at a time and solder in a new length of wire. Try to keep the wires you are soldering in all one length. I have not done this personally mind you.

RE: Relocating Climate Control Unit
ok, thanks. well that sounds promising. i figure it cant be that hard to just extend the wires, hopefully its long enough to reach already.
anyway, heres some pics of what will be going in the car.....
this will be intergrated into the arm rest (the part that slides out). it's a perfect fit and usb driven.
the airbox 2 for mobile broadband
and of course a police scanner

Hello, I'm new to this forum and I have a 2002 Jaguar Xtype with a factory satnav Touch screen radio & I'm in the process of fabricating a Indash IPad as a audio source to subwoofers in trunk and all aftermarket door speakers wired to amps but all the climate control push buttons are attached to the molded plastic on the side of the touch screen is there anyway I could buy a different style climate control module of an xtype that didn't havea satnav doubledin? and plug the wire in and relocate it to my glove box. ??? Any help pleasee .

Jagboy, in simple answer is it is possible, but you are looking at a lot of rewiring and removing of the control components. People have looked at upgrading the other way and every one that I have seen attempt this has given up do the amount of work it would take to make it happen.
I am not saying that it can't be done, but most have pretty much come to the conclusion that it would be easier to buy another car than to make that change.

Thermo, appreciate it I'm now thinking twice of it. So my Jaguar Xtype I bought came fitted with a Satnav Touch screen but screen does not work, Etc my radio will only work if I unplug it then plug it back it. So I thought of that. Would you have any ideas on how to change the climate control buttons instead of how they are attached to the side of the double din??? If that makes sense. I would post pictires but I don't know how, I'm new to this

jagboy22, I understand completely. Converting from the SAT/NAV setup to the other setup where the buttons are separate from the radio is a very involved thing. You would be undoing a lot of stuff. Maybe I am not quite getting what you are trying to do. The climate control buttons are part of the radio. They are not bolted on to the sides or anything like that.
From what you are describing, your best bet atleast for the short term is to get a different radio through say e-bay (just make sure that whoever sends you the radio, also includes the radio key, it will be a 4 digit number). Then you can possibly see if you can get yourself a new screen/back light assembly and then you can get atleast part of your money back for that.
I guess I am not completely getting what you are after. What I am thinking you are wanting to do is to remove the buttons off the side of the radio and re-mount them somewhere else. But, as I mentioned, they are an integral part of the radio and cannot be simply removed and mounted somewhere else.

Thermo, Yeah hard to describe but I finally uploaded a picture, this first one with the touch screen is how my jaguar exactly looked. But I'm trying to get the climate control unit like the second picture instead of how they were factory made on the side of the radio in the first picture.

This is how I'm trying to get my climate control unit to look like instead of the way it is all on the sides of the first picture thermo. Btw these aren't my cars just reference I got my iPad to play all my audio only stuck on the climate relocating part, so I can fit my custom iPad into my dash. Lol

jagboy, you are looking at going from the automatic controls to the manual controls. Unfortuantely, that is a lot of reworking of the dash in the way of wiring and whatnot. It is not a simple "unplug from here and plug it in there".
How are you with wiring? I could send you the diagrams and then you can see what all would need to be done in the way of relocating things. If I remember right, you are looking at having to pull pins from out of a connector and move them to new spots and other stuff like that.
