Rental???

Rental???
I'm looking at a 2006 X-Type and the Carfax shows it as a "rental" until just over 6k miles. It was then sold to the "first owner."
It sounds to me like this was a service loaner owned by the selling dealership and was then sold as a "demo - never titled," though I suppose some rental car agencies (Hertz?) did have X-Types for rent.
How much less would this car be worth? I'm guessing the title is branded like it would be if it were used as a taxi or police car, no?

For it to say Rental on a carfax it was 100% a rental car like you said, Hertz did rent them for a fact.
It would still have a clean title. They arent necessarily worth less because they are a rental but that will be with the cars history and it makes it harder to sell. So it should be priced very reasonably compared to other similar Xs in your area.
I personally wouldnt get near it. I have an analogy for you: Buying a used rental car is like marrying a hooker, After that many people have stuck their key in the ignition and given it a good ride why would you want it?

Not 100% sure about Jaguar but many manufacturers have a rental programs through the dealerships. Incentives are offered to the dealers to buy cars for rental/loaner service.
I see no reason to summarily condemn such cars. If it looks and drives like a good car, it probably IS a good car. If it looks and drives like it has been beaten to death, it probably HAS been beaten to death.
Heh heh....if you buy a used car that was privately owned it may well have had several drivers, including a teenage son who ran thrashed the daylights out of it ! You just never know....

While having an abusive previous owner is almost always a possibility with a used car, it's likely that the previous owner was not abusive.
OTOH, you can practically guarantee that a rental car has been abused by some renters. This example was a rental only up to 6k miles which means that the abuse was early in life which makes it even worse.
I'm searching for an X-Type and I just found another one that was a rental until 10k. Strangely, Carfax suggests that these cars are MORE valuable than normal because they have only one previous owner!!!

y'all are giving advice on a car you've never seen and know nothing about. I find that absurd, really.
qest: Go check it out! Look it over well. look for signs of abuse and damage. Rental fleets at the very least quite typically are serviced regularly. You may find it to be a great car. Don't dismiss the idea that it may have been mistreated.... but how would these fortune-tellers on here know that?

Since when do Jags need to be babied? And I, for one, "open 'er up and see what she'll do" on a fairly regular basis. :-) :-)
I wouldn't pass up a possibly good car simply on the *assumption* that it has been thrashed. Nor, for example, would I assume that a "doctor's car" has been well serviced, or that a "little old lady's" car has lived an easy life.....or any number of other urban legends !
