Default Replace Oil Pan Gasket

Hey There,

So I'm new here. My Jag is leaking oil. I went to get the oil changed and they said the oil pan gasket needs replaced. They just gave me the oil change for free lol

I called the shop and they quoted me like $900 and 2 days. That's outrageous! For a $20 part, I understand labor is expensive, but why would they have to lift up the engine to do this?

It can't be that serious.

OK. So, my husband and I are two very intelligent people--very mechanically inclined.

Please tell me what parts and tools I need as well as the steps to do the job. Hell with the shop. I'm going rogue

Thanks

Oh. And also, my coolant keeps depreciating. I already replaced a hose myself that had melted off at the engine. It was fine for awhile and stopped the leak. Now, I'm forced to fill up the coolant tank every so often to keep the fan from over running.

The tank is not leaking. So, what else could it be if the hose has been replaced already??

Have bad news for you: your shop was not necessarily out of line on their pricing. A design flaw(?) in our cars makes it all but impossible to drop the oil pan by loosening a few nuts, replacing the gasket and then buttoning it back up. Transfer case is in the way. Some have gotten around that. Do a search on here. It has been discussed about a gazillion times through the years here. You will quickly understand what I mean.

As for your coolant, not sure if I could help you there, but you might want to check your water pump. They seem to go around 100K miles. I remember mine must have been leaking very very little so you couldn't even tell where the leak was and then one day it finally went.

Good luck! Hope you get things sorted out quickly.

Why did they give you a free oil change? Did they think you were going to have them change your oil pan gasket?

Shop around. I'd recommend your local independent Jag specialist. He'll know what he's doing and should do it in a day. My guy did mine in six hours and it cost me around $700.
As the previous guys have said... It's not an easy job, but your guy seems to be a little expensive.
Good luck.

Oh, avoid a Jag dealer. Unless you have $1500 to donate!

They gave us a free oil change because we mentioned it was leaking. They said they would check it out. After they changed the oil and figured out the leak, they said there is no point in charging us because it is that bad. It was just a basic oil changing station so I don't know how knowledgeable they actually were.

When I look under the car, there are just spots of oil so I'm not sure why they labeled it as severe.

03jaguargirl - I read in another post that you were going to sell car. Hopefully everyone this forum can help you get the problems fixed, so you'll change you mind.

Oil Pan Gasket - The pan is an easy fix EXCEPT for 1 bolt on the pan. This bolt requires your to remove/move transfer case. Some people have used a bent (homemade) wrench to get to this bolt. I've removed the transfer case bolt and cut a section of this bolt housing out to get to the last oil pan bolt. See pic.

Coolant Leak - See the attached pick and check to see it there is a coolant sitting on engine near the aluminum tube. If there is sitting coolant, replace the o-ring on the aluminum tube.

Hope this helps

We found a mechanic by word of mouth who will do it for $250. Thank GOD!!

He said it may not even be the gasket as you can't see it from under the car so how the hell did Jiffy Lube diagnose it as that while trying to change the oil. He said since our coolant keeps depreciating even after we replaced the hose going to the engine that melted off and a diagnostic code said it is due to a hose, it is more likely the oil coolant line.

I called Jiffy Lube and the guy said he isn't sure why his guys said that to us.

I replaced a dozen or more when I worked at the dealer and did it the correct way (displace the transfer case).
Now I have my own shop and give the customer the option of boring a hole in the edge of the transfer case to remove the hidden bolt.

It does require using a hole saw (maybe about 16mm or 18mm) but it cuts the time down considerably.

Just an option you might consider.

Thank you for that option. It does help because I can ask the mechanic who will do it for $250 if he would like that option to make his job easier lol

With the under tray removed you can easily see the whole oil pan gasket. Diagnostic code said it was due to a hose? There is no such diagnostic code and it is impossible for your car to know if it's leaking or not. I think you should change your mechanic.

As for your coolant leak, the cooling system has so many connections and hoses that could leak. There are some common locations that could leak, like thermostat housing or thermostat housing to engine block and like Jeeves12 said, O-ring on aluminum tube.
