Replacing the TCM on a 2003 X-Type
Hello everyone.
I bought a salvage 2003 XType 3.0 last year and been trying to fix it ever since (Almost a year now). Finished all the outside problems the car had and after starting the car it wouldn't go. After several weeks found that the TCM was burned. So I started to look for a used one and turned out to be the imposible to get one to match all the parameters, so2 weeks ago I order a new one at the dealer and after $850. I have it readey for install.
Now the problem and request for knowledge. The dealer told me that this was not a plug and play computer and that it would have to be programmed before or during installation. Not sure. Is this true? And if so, how can I do it.
Thanks in advance for the information you can give me.

I'd fit it first & see how it goes, the dealer is only gonna load a certain revision of software, I can't believe each one is tailored to each individual gearbox, you may need a particular revision for that particular box, sadly the dealer is gonna have to do it.

Sadly I'm not a Jaguar technician so I couldn't say for certain, but thinking about electronic devices - if it's the the right TCM model for that 'box I don't see how a software issue could cause the TCM physical harm - but if you have any concerns then you could fit everything and then transport the car to the dealer just to let them deal with programming the TCM.

The TCM is defenitely not plug and play. They have NO programming whatsoever out of the box. After installation you will have flashing lights on the dash and if you have the message center it will say "pecus T" meaning the TCM is not programmed. Your only option is to have it programmed at a dealer. The car will move and no damage to the TCM will occur but it wont be driveable on the road as it will not shift.
