Hey guys. another interesting one here that should garner a few laughs. I went to my mechanic last week to have a wheel bearing and control arm replaced. After he did the initial work of checking hat was wrong he aid he needs to replace the bearing and control arm which is fine with me BUT,
He quoted me $950 !!! Someone please reassure me this isn't the standard repair price for a bearing and a control arm?
I mean, the bearing is about $40-$50 and the control arm is about $200. So does it really require that much LABOR? or does the dude just think im a fool?.

I found a great mechanic who has his own shop. Before I found this guy, I went to two different dealerships (one being a Jaguar) and vowed never to return. I don't know much about what you are having done, but if you trust the mechanic, then you need to put your trust somewhere. Good luck!

I had my "new" X-Type checked over by my local Jag dealer for "self-insurance", ie piece of mind. It did come out clean. While there, I asked the service rep for a price on changing the trans, differential and transaxle oils, given the age and low mileage (from sitting and doing less than 1,500 miles a year). SHELLSHOCK TIME! He quoted me a price of $998.00! Ahhhh, no thank you. My normal shop will do the stuff for a lot less and I'll save the rest for my kid's college tuition cost next semester!

See if any Jag Technicians that post on the Board are within driving distance. I took my car to Brutal from the Forums. He is an awesome guy. He's honest, and changed my brake pads, did an underbody inspection, and was just great. The guys that post here, do it on their own time and dime, and if we can give back a little to them, we should.

The few times I went to a Jaguar dealer for a estimate for a repair, it always seems to be $900 plus. IE I was quoted $920 for replace both front and rear roll bar bushing. My local mechanic did it for $250 including parts. $900 must be the magic number to keep the service department open.
