Default Scary whine when the engine is cold

Hello guys! I just bought my first Jaguar. A 2004 X Type with a 2 liter V6.

Great car, however, it's making a whining sound while accelerating. Really loud when the engine is cold. As soon as I start the car and rev it, there is no sound whatsoever. But, if I shift into Drive or Reverse, and back into park and rev it, it whines. That's it. I don't even have to move the car. Won't make a sound until I shift into a gear, but after I shift, it whines continuously with the RPM. It's a fairly loud groaning whine. Kind of scary.

It quiets down when warmed up. But it's still noticable. I googled a bit and found out that it could be the transfer case, but my car, being FWD, doesn't have a transfer case. Pretty confused right now.

I took a quick video and uploaded it on YouTube. Please have a listen.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

hard to tell on a video but sounds a little like the heat shield on the exhaust manifold.
common issue...one of the mounting bolt areas can rust through and the shield becomes loose and rattles.
google x type loose exhaust heat shield.
plenty of posts in here about it

Use jaguarforums + X-Type + loose exhaust heatshield for your Google search criteria. As iownme says, there's plenty of relevant posts.

Thanks for the replies! I tried the search criteria, got results, but only found one video, and that was about a constant rattle.

If it is a heat shield, how can the pitch change with engine RPM?

This only happens when revving the engine. When I started the car and revved it, it didn't make a sound. I then shifted into D and kept it for 2 seconds, then to R, again for 2 seconds, and then shifted back to P. Revved it, THATS when the whine started! I didnt move the car, Just kept my foot on the brake and shifted to D and back.

Heres a video I took while revving, right after starting the car.

And heres a video I took while revving, after shifting to D and back.

So, no whine until I shift into a gear and back to Park. It can't be the gearbox because its fully disengaged when in Park, right?

i can only lead you to the water.
im not a physics scolar so i cannot explain the hows and whys of your noise.
what i can say is that you have the classic sound and symptoms of what i have suggested is the cause.
your 2nd post only confirms this more.
feel free to look for other causes... perhaps try the chevy forum... lol

The noise from the heat shield is a harmonic vibration; as the revs rise so does the vibration and hence the pitch.
Check it, what have you got to lose?

Sorry for the late reply guys. Was a little busy yesterday. Alright. You guys are the experts, and that's why I came here. If that's what you guys say, then that's what I will check

I was skeptical because it doesn't make a sound until I shift into a gear.

I'll get this baby up on a hoist ASAP and give you guys an update.

Thanks a lot for helping me out!

There's another possibility that others have found when it was not a heat shield or a cat/muffler rattle.

Check the

X Type Rear Motor Mount C2S38951

also called the "dogbone".

So I put the car up on a lift and checked all the heat shields. They're all nice and tight. No rattles.

I did notice that the right hand side engine mount appears to have been squashed a little. That could be it?
