Default scoop (?)

i have read numerous times about a 'scoop' plate type part that is suppose to cover the transfer case (could have this wrong).

i have read that you are supposed to remove the scoop in order to be able to change oil / flush transfer case.

i didn't have to remove anything whenever i performed these two tasks, and i have read that not having it in the winter time can increase chances of destroying transfer case / oil pan.

am i on the right track and should i have this part?
if so what is the actual name of it so i can order it & install.

thanks.

THe scoop is actually under the oil pan, not the transfer case and then this scoops pushes the cool under car air over to the transfer case, to aide in cooling. Should you have it, yes, is it absolutely necessary, NO. I haven't had one on my car since I have owned it and I have put 30K miles on the car with no negative issues.

Where most people rip the scoop off is during the winter driving through more than about 4" of snow.

Unfortunately, there is no good upgrade for this as the entire scoop is made out of plastic. They made it that way so should the scoop catch on anything, it gives before something else does. Unfortunately, it gives a little too easy if you ask me. I'm sure others will have stories about how they have bought numerous scoops and end up doing so about once a year.

jn_lego, try talking with ken@britishparts.com. He should be able to get the scoop for you. If not, try http://www.jagbits.com. Finally, go and talk with http://www.jaguarparts.com. I just ordered parts from them on Monday, the box was sitting on my porch on Wednesday.

I made my scoop out of aircraft aluminum, fashioned and moulded to the plastic one. So mine is still on.... and yes it will give in snow (etc) and then you just bend it back. If anyone is interested in doing this, I did post a DIY on it last year. Total cost is about $10 and 1 hour of bending and hammering it into shape.
