Thumbs up Seat Restoration & Gliptone Colorwashing

When we got the Jag a few weeks ago, the front seats were pretty well trashed.

Old Drivers Side

Old Passenger Side

We replaced them for $100 ea and got the additional benefits of lumbar support and heated seats (old passenger side was manual - old driver side was basic elect). Removal of old seats and installation of newer seats took about 1 hr each side thanks to the GREAT info we picked up on this forum.

Both of the newer seats have minor cracks and scuffs so I hunted this forum and others and finally decided to try a colorwashing system from Gliptone Liquid Leather out of England instead of fill and paint systems I have seen others use. With this system you do not fill in the cracks, rather you clean them and then re-dye (aka colorwash) the leather using a matching dye from Gliptone. They claim that filling the crack will only temporarily improve the situation and in fact will eventually cause the crack to worsen. I did a small section of the driver seat as a test and so far I am pleased with what I am seeing. The cracks are still slightly visible, however, I am hoping that with proper leather care in the future, they will not worsen and remain almost invisible....

Just thought I would share my experience with others who may have great cars mechanically but wish the interior was a little nicer. (BTW - their leather cleaner works amazing - will use it on the rest of the seats this weekend. Then try their leather conditioner afterwards. Have read good things, but experiencing it first hand is always the ultimate test.

Gliptone Leather Care | Leather Cleaner

The exchange rate is a killer.. lol

The dye comes in a treatment package called "ScuffMaster". I think the small bottle of dye (65 ml) cost me around $36 US and takes about 1 week to arrive.

The Cleaner and Conditioner can be obtained in USA - I bought off e-bay.

I've used the Gliptone kits on several vehicles. and the Jag is due!

It does a REAL impressive job on steering wheels!

Used conditioner on all seats 24 hrs after repair/dyeing - no loss of dye.

Fingers crossed - will update with steadfastness of dye to repaired areas as appropriate.
