Hello again, our 2004 X Type 3.0 automatic AWD with under 200K kms still runs great but now seems to only have one speed in forward?? I can shift into all gears with the shifter and reverse works, Park and Neutral are fine as well. Putting into drive or 1,2,3,4 only has one gear it seems. Slow to get moving but will reach 120kmph no problem without over revving so I imagine its only engaging 3d maybe? No sensation of shifting gears automatically either.
There is a transmission fault light on the dash. Is there a control module for the transmission shifting? Or maybe a fault with the gated shifter even though it feels normal when shifting through all gears even the gated low gear positions, just wont shift automatically up or down in any forward gear, just the one its in? But yet it shifts out of forward and into R/N/P as normal. Manual shifting between forward gears does nothing.

rdashton, please get your codes read. This should give us some insight to what is acting up in your car. Having the car stuck in a gear is a classic sign that the transmission is in a failure mode and it is giving you a chance to get to a repair shop. But, the code(s) will give someone like me a very clear idea of what your car is thinking is wrong. Based on past problems other have seen, I am wondering if you are having a grounding of your shift solenoids. This is fixed by removing a cover on the side of the transmission (some fluid is going to come out as I recall) and then applying some shrink sleeving to the wiring there. The tranny fluid kills the insulation and results in grounds, leading to the TCM not being able to control the solenoids.
