Slipping Clutch - Should I be Prepared...
After the whole HID headlight install fiasco, I noticed that the car was slipping occasionally, especially when trying to pass on the interstate. I've called one Jaguar dealer, and of course they gave me an outrageous price of $2,800, which is 25% of what I paid for the damn car.
So for you US guys and gals, what's a reasonable price for a clutch job? I don't want to be in denial, and I hope that's not what it is, but i'm sure that the clutch doesn't need adjusting, as I think it has a self adjusting clutch. Anyway, any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

If you take it to a regular mechanic instead of the dealer you should be looking at anywhere from $700-1500 including parts and labor. The parts aren't that expensive, it is the labor that is going to hurt. I would definately search for a very reputable shop that stands by their work because if something goes wrong you need to be able to hold someone responsible.

If anyone has taken their car anywhere besides the dealer, what places do you recommend? If it's slipping, is it necessarily the clutch? Could it be something else? Hopefully nothing MAJOR, but if it's the clutch, i'm sure I can handle that as it has 90k miles on it and that's to be expected if it hasn't been replaced.

Most times if you are only getting slipping under high amounts of load (heavy accel, launches, etc) then it is the clutch disk worn out. We have special flywheels that I do not believe can be resurfaced (maybe they can, but I don't think so) so unless it is damaged it should be fine. Sounds like normal mileage for a clutch change.
If you car was lower mileage I'd say perhaps it was the rear main seal leaking oil onto your clutch, but given your mileage it is most likely clutch wear. Be sure to keep us posted on what you pay to have it replaced.

Why would the jag cost so much? Just because it is awd??? My cousin got his fwd saturn including parts changed for like 300 including labor and parts and michigan sales tax...if the parts are cheap why is the labor THAT expensive, given it is awd? AWD makes it that expensive?

I'm wondering how long I can drive it like this. It only slips under extreme load, which is how I found out it was slipping. If I granny it, it drives just fine.
I'm trying to wait this out as long as I can before I get it done. Might as well get my money's worth out of this clutch on its last leg.

I once had a Vauxhall Vectra and the clutch went on it....lol
I had to drive it for 240 miles or so to Bolton to get it fixed manually meshing the gears the whole way
The real fun part was when I had to stop for fuel, park on an incline and push it as fast as I could then jump in and try to mesh 2nd gear manually with no clutch.....made it ok....just....lol

Yes odds are it is just the clutch disk. Most clutches go around 100k miles depending on driving conditions. I can understand why it would cost so much given the trans axle has to be removed etc along with a bunch of other parts I am sure. This will add significantly to the price. Sure you can get a fwd 5spd saturn to be replaced with a new clutch and resurfaced flywheel for 500 bucks. However, those cars are designed to be simplistic and cheap. Its alot less work to drop a tranny for a saturn then an awd car. I have a friend who paid 2600 to get his clutch replaced on his S4. So I would say its in the right ball park.
