Default A snap wire on the 2004+ airbags

Hi folks,

Following up the thread about the steering wheel replacement (due to the curling issue) I found that there are several offers of 2004+ airbags but there is a small detail which I can't figure out.

Some airbags have a snap wire on the backside and some don't. I tried to talk to the sellers but...they don't really know a thing as they are just junkyards.

Let me show you what I mean:
1.
2.
3.
4.

So I have a question...what is the purpose of this "snap wire" ? And is it ok to buy an airbag without it or not? And is it possible to get a new "wire" from somewhere? I had took a look on the internet but found nothing.

Thx to everyone who replies

Cheers

Nardo, doing some research, you are looking at 2 different ways of mounting the air bag. The 02-early 04's have the non-snap wire setup. They use 2 screws to hold the air bag to the steering wheel. The mid 04's on have clips built into the steering wheel that snap on to the wire that you point out. The air bag is not physically bolted to the steering wheel. It is simply snapped into place. If you do have screws holding it in place, it is simply there to make sure the airbag doesn't leave the steering wheel during deployment.

The best advice that I can give you is to take a few moments, remove the airbag from your car and see if it has the snap wire installed or not unless you know that you have the early or late style car.

Thermo,

Thanks a lot for your reply!

I have a "mid facelift" car which has a new instrumental panel, headrests and etc. - everything except a new style steering wheel.
The airbag cover starts to curl a little bit on the edges + I'm not a big fan of it's design, so I decided to replace it with a new style steering wheel. Which basically does not look quite pretty too, but feels a bit better than the old one .

The airbags on the pictures are all "new style" . So that's why I'm confused, since some sell them without a snap wire even though they were not deployed.

I do have a new style steering wheel and in a few days a new airbag is coming (a one without a snap wire huh), and I'll try to fit it to see how things are going. But as far as I can see from this ... the airbag is not gonna be held on the steering wheel.
