Some problems with my 2003 4.2 S-Type
Hello,
I have been lurking the past few days and have gleaned some very valuable information. Thank you all!
I have many questions about my car but the most important ones follow:
[ol][*]My heated front windscreen only heats in certain areas across the windscreen. Why and how can I fix it?[*]My key transmitter has stopped working and it does not qualify for the TSB (I have to work on the dealer yet, since the car was re-warranted for 2 years when I bought it). The battery is new since I replaced it first. I understand I'll have to take it to the dealer since it is not user-reprogrammable. What are my chances, do you think?[*]I had the catastrophic failure somebody else had (14/04/2008) but I had not been fooling around under the hood. The dealer got 29 different codes, leaving him not knowing where to start. The car is operational now but who knows?[/ol]
The car was bought on Feb. 22, 2007 with 29,900+ km on the clock first warranty expiring March 24, 2007. It now has a 2-year, 80k kms extension from Jaguar.
I just love the car and it is a dream but these problems are bothering me. I am pretty self-reliant, having fooled around with mainly American cars for 45 years but time marches on and being in the process of restoring and maintaining two late-30s American cars, I don't have much time for the new-fangled ones and I don't have the new diagnostic tools. Don't get me wrong about computers, though since I have been in the IT business for 39+ years. I am well aware of what dodgy power can do to computers big and small.
There, 'nuff said! I hope some of you techs out there can help.
Cheers to you all!

1 - needs a windshield.. if it isnt heating the entire thing.. the windshield is heated up left and right at the same time. if different parts are not getting heated then the windshield is toast.. now if the left or right side is not getting heated completely wiring and relay shud be checked for proper operation.. but i wud say it needs a windhield
2-needs 2 remotes..
3-what catistrophic failure? any codes?

Hi Jag_Genius!
Thanks for your reply! About the windshield, I think you are right. I will find a way to check relays.
OK transmitters - the car is due for service soon and I will try to get them under the Select Warranty.
There were 29 different codes, but if it happens again, I hope to be ready with a better code reader than I have. Thanks to the forum, I found I wasted my money buying a cheap one. I'll use it on my old 1996 Dodge Dakota which is now semi-retired.
Cheers and thanks again!

Hi Jag_Genius!
I was slowing down, foot off the throttle from about 100kph into a 50 kph speed zone (I had started well back!) and the speed had decayed to about 50 kph when all of a sudden all warnig lights came on and the engine stalled. Initially, I had a red engine check light. I restarted the engine before completely stopped and the engine check light was still red. I shut everything down, got out and checked the oil level which was fine. I then restared and was presented with an amber check light, no others and was in limp mode. A fine young fellow came along and after a brief interlude of limp mode, we towed the car, auto-trans in neutral, idling at 500 rpm at no more than 50 kph. 10 km later at whome after unhooking from his handy tow strap, I moved the car readily, full power restored. Left the car next day, droved to work in another vehicle, called dealer, and was told to drivew it in so long as the light remained amber which it did. They drained 29 codes and did not know where to start. (I don't blame them a bit). Told if it happens again, told to call Jag roadside for assistance and get towed in.
A long story but that is what happened. I have other issues such as an intermittent false engine coolant low MIL and message (First time was correct and I topped up with the proper coolant). The other thing is my steering wheel sometimes fails to come down to the preset and I have to reset memory now.
Thanks for any help!
Cheers,
Hengist

I think you have a very good point. I've been in the IT business for a long time and know that computers can be affected by the wrong voltages. I'll get out my multimeter and try checking some stuff out. That may explain some of the stuff I've mentioned previously.
Thank you!

Thank you very much for the info about the remotes! Unfortunately I don't have the codes they printed out and my poor cheapo code reader can't even link! I tried it yesterday. I'll have to get a better one. I'm 1000 km away from my servicing, so when I go in, I'll see if I can get a photocopy of their printout from their files. I'll be there in about a week and a half - my commute causes rapid builup of kms.
Car is just great fuel consumption-wise! 9.0/100km combined highway and city even with the 4.3. Can't beat it with a stick!
Cheers
