RE: sound system
What year is your car?
For pre-2004MY, the head unit powers the speakers in exactly the same way as the standard system, with the sub woofer connected in parallel to provide bass. Both the tweeters and main speakers in each of the four doors are powered by a sngle pair from the head unit, so if the tweeters work then the main speakers should (there are no inline connectors, the cables are spliced off within the doors themselves).
For post-2004MY, if you have the premiums system then the head unit doesn't have anything to do with the system, it is just there to look pretty and give you a volume button. The amp in the back does everything. The door speakers are connected directly to the amp unit, with the front tweeters powered separately to the front main speakers (the rear doors are shared, with one pair going to each door, identical to the earlier system).
Two things come to mind:
Firstly, whichever year your car is, is it possible you could have applied too much power to the speakers? IIRC the tweeters are isolated whereas the main speakers are not and could fry.
Secondly, if you have a post-2004MY car, have you done any work with the fibre optic link recently? I can't think whjy you would only get partial sound, but it is a possibility. If not, then it could be the amp itself.

RE: sound system
It is pretty hard to know you have voltage at the sub amp.... it is deep inside the sub enclosure.
so either the guy does not know what he is talking about or maybe he tool the sub box out and took it all apart and got to the amp, and found out there is power there.... oooh wait.. that does not make sense... again maybe he does not know what he is talking about
hahaha dont worry this is just me being an ***.. ron.. write in at least parital sentences. I dont know what you have checked and how you have checked it.did youlook at the fuses? did youtest with a test-light? did you use a meter? or did you test at the actual radio and sub ???
Seriously man. you need to check the system logically. Show your logic here and if you get stuck, we well lead you..

XDAVE,
Seems like you know your stuff about the systems in the X. I have a 2002 X Sport 5sp manual and I love it. But the cassette deck makes me want to toss my cookiesjust looking at it. Along with navi I have the 6 disc changer in the rear but I want to swap the in dash cassetteplayer for a cd player I found on ebay. Can you verify for me if this will work? The Jag dealer thinks they usedifferent cables and it won't work, but then again they're much better at raping me than giving me accurate info! Ya heard?
Thx,
Nate

RE: sound system
hey bojan,
here is how i checked my system out. i followed the wire diagram for the 02 xtype with prem. sound i got the diagram from my copy of (jtis). removed the sub from back trunk and tested the power wire that feeds the unit with a fluke voltmeter have 12v going to it. Bought another amp from ebay and tried it to insure that the amp was not burned out. did the same thing sub woofer worked and front door tweeters.
figured it was the head unit going by the wiring diagram it shows speeker wires run from head unit to speekers and from sub amp to speekers. so i got another head unit, installed it and same thing again. I checked the fuses buy pulling and looking at element to see if it was burnt.
none were i used the manual that comes with the car to determine what fuses to check.
i thought mabe their is a loose conection but if that was the case the tweeters would not work since they share the same wires. mabe your right about the woofers being fried but all 4 at the same time.
ron
thanks for the input

RE: sound system
All 4 speaker pairs run into the sub connector.
You could try to unplug the connector and take a test speaker, and see if the sound is coming full range to the sub amp. if you get sound there then the radio head unit is working.
If you do get sound at the sum amp from all 4 channels, then the problem must be inthe doors. that will be a pain.

RE: sound system
Hey bo any pics of the amp and all of that? I'd love to see the subs and amps...
I don't feel like looking but what would the difficulty be to find one on ebay and hook it up in the trunk...I know the sound wouldn't be worth it but how difficult considering you found that power connection in the boot?

Xdave,
I will give it a shot. btw, do you have step by step instruction on how to remove the radio and navi? I have an 02 X Sport 3.0 5sp. I recently changed out my limp ashtray & ripped shifter boot. I didn't staple the boot down yet so I can still pull it up with ease.
Thanks,
Nate

RE: sound system
I think it is quite difficult to add a used factory sub to a non-premium car. The problem is that the little amp inside the sub does not have a typical turn on (power antenna) wire from the radio. There is a control wire that turns the amp on and of but it is not a 12V switch. So you cant get the factory (crappy anyway) amp to turn on.
But if you find a factory subwoofer and do what I did I think it is a nice improvement. You will need to buy an amp that has 2 things, It need to have high level inputs and a sub crossover.
I think you can find an amp like that. you can tap into the rear speakers wires as inputs. alternatively you can get a high to low input adaptor and add a crossover either passive or active.
I think that the factory sub box is reasonable for ordinary listening. and certainly is great that is fits in and does not rob much space.
dont forget the relay you need to activate the accy wire in the trunk. I ended up going to the scrapyard and found most fords have about 5-10 of these relays. Often they charge me nothing for small parts but that day they charged me 2 bucks. The dealer wants almost 90 dollars and the parts store wanted just under fifty dollars.

RE: sound system
Just to add information to the thread, there are two factory premium sound (amplified) systems for the X-Type. The one used on pre-2004MY cars is what bojangles describes, and is not really that great. The one on post 2004MY cars with the separate amplifier on the D2B network is the same system they are fitting to new models todaywhich is a vast improvement--totally incomparable. The latter can be retrofitted to any model year car for the price of a second hand amp ($100 from eBay), two subs ($40 froman electronic components firm) and an upgrade cable harness (I make them, or you can make your own). Whether you add tweeters is up to you. I've helped about adozen people to fit these systems to date to X-Types, XJs and an S-Type (post 2003), and although the instructions given below are now outdated (I have a simpler to install design) the end result is the same: http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/viewtop...=premium+sound. Typically it works out cheaper to take that route than it does to put in your own system, and you gain the advantage of things like DSP, and full intergration with your car's controls.
