spark plug gap?

I got my first Jaguar last week, an 02 X-Type, 2.5L manual, Charcoal gray on black leather. 17" wheels on 45series tires. I got it with 80,000 miles on it and no service records, however this is a really clean specimen, good price, and I needed a car so I bought it. Anyway, I would like to replace the plugs but WOW! After reading the link from Buck, that is one involved process.
Question: How much do dealers around the country charge for this service? Anyone ever have it done?
I'm in Tucson AZ. My dealer is closed today, but I'll post the price tomorrow with all relevant details. I don't know if I'll do it myself yet, I want to digest the Motor Project blog. btw. Great resource, thanks.

It really isn't that hard. Removing the intake manifold is the hardest part and it isn't really hard but rather time consuming. I wouldn't be overly worried about getting new gaskets for the manifold as they're rubber and quite beefy. I'd say it took me 3-4 hours or so and I was slow, **** and cleaned everything as I took it apart. The plugs were absolutely shot at 100k for me. I wouldn't wait too long to do it.
I would suspect that book time for replacing 'em is 2.5 hours. So at a Jag dealer I'd say $300 would be a good price including the plugs.
Just did the XJR this past week and it was much easier to do. Spent maybe 2 hours on the plugs. Those were just as bad with 65k on the odo.

Patterson, doing the plugs isn't that bad. Like was mentioned, it will take about 3 hours (depending on how fast your wrench is). The trick I will tell you is not to disconnect the coolant lines from the throttlebody, but to simply undo the 4 bolts holding the throttlebody to the upper intake structure. The "hardest" part of the whole thing is removing the 2 10mm bolts on the back side of the intake (between the intake and the firewall). Not a lot of room, but even with my bearclaws, I could get those bolts in and out.
A word to the wise, once you remove the upper part of the intake, this is a good time to replace the upper intake gaskets and also the IMT valve gaskets. They will both be very easy to access at this time and atleast the IMT valve gaskets are notorious vacuum leaks. Also, don't forget to put a little rag in each of the air intakes to prevent dropping something into the engine. That is what would make this job ugly.
In short, take your time, stay out of the heat (was just in Tempe a week ago), and take your time. Well worth the money in my book as the dealership is going to get you for somewhere between $300-400. The plugs are only going to run you maybe $50. Even tossing in the gaskets, you are around $100.

Thanks guys! I called Jaguar of Tucson today and they want $900.00 to change the plugs on an '02 X-type. I asked him to clarify and he did, $900.00 to R&R the spark plugs. He said they also install new upper and lower Intake manifold gaskets during this service.
He asked how many miles I had, I said 80K, he then reminded me that this svc is recommended at 100K. However, BeneBob says his plugs were absolutely shot at 100K when he replaced his. I will be doing my own, even if I could find a shop to do it for $300, I still want to do it myself.
Thermo, thanks for the Hot Tips man. "Leave the coolant lines to the throttle body and unscrew 4 bolts holding the TB to the upper intake". With what you said and the blog file, and some help from God, I'll get 'er Done.
Meanwile, today I replaced that crankcase breather tube that tends to develop a breach. It runs alongside the main air intake and is now a ribbed Plastic tube rather than a smooth Rubber tube. I read the JF thread about "Cruise Control & Jerking". Here's a picture of the new one against the old one.

900 for plugs. Sad thing is I'm sure people pay it. I don't remember doing anything with the throttle body aside from some electrical connectors. I know I didn't do anything with the coolant lines. I think I was able to lift up and support the manifold and gain enough access to the rear. Honestly, I can't fault the dealer for doing the gaskets as if it leaks afterwards it'll cost them some face and time to then go back and replace them but once you see them you'll know the likelihood of a leak is pretty small as long as you're careful. They're like large o rings rather than a paper gasket.

D. Black, that is a beautiful black Jag. I like the fresh windows! no tint
Is it lowered? If so, by how much from factory height? I want to lower mine so bad.... I'm not big into Mod's but that's one I have to do.
I have a few thousand miles to get ready for my tune up, but I look forward to your Spark Plug write up bro!
