Today the Coventry Foundation rec. a request from a gentleman regarding a special tool he needs. The tool is evidently still available ($2006.00) but we were glad he requested loaning it as to be frank we were not that sure what it did. Anyway as we took pics to send him we thought some of you might like to know it is available and to see it!
Well Dell the Knot head would be me. That is a 300k + X300 that has been taken care of! Do you not see the micro fiber cloths below it! You must be a glass half empty sort of chap!
I had the front sub-frame off and needed to align it when I bolted it back on. I took a 3/4" wooden dowel and chucked it up in the drill press and sanded it down a hair (poor man's lathe) until it was a tight fit in a sched 40 PVC pipe. The 3/4" dowel is an exact fit to the alignment hole in the unibody and the PVC pipe is an exact fit to the front subframe alignment holes. About $2005 less than the Jag tool. It won't do all the height alignment checks per the shop manual but for the life of me I couldn't figure out what I would do with those measurements, the subframe mounts to the unibody at the precise height of wherever the unibody is. You unbolt it and you bolt it back on. I'm sure it is more complicated and I'm probably missing something but the car tracks straight and the tires are wearing evenly so I'm happy.
We have no idea on using this tool or any of the other full set of factory service tools we hold for the x type. Perhaps we could save storage space and let them go as it seems they are not necessary. It is odd that we have loaned hundreds of special tools for all models but now that this has been discussed we have never loaned an X Type tool. Hummm?
