Default Starting Problem

Hello

I have a 2003 (CF1) Jaguar X Type 2.5L Manual.

I came to go to work last night and when i tried to start the car all of the lights came up etc but all I heard was a 'click'. I thought the battery was low but when I tried to use jumper leads with my Wifes car, they began to glow before I got anywhere, so I quickly took them off.

Today I towed the vehicle off the drive to the top of a hill and it bumped started fine. I then switched it off and it started of its own accord. I then left it an hour and when I went back I was back to the clicking sound again. It bumped started ok but I cant go out in the car as if I am parked on the flat I will have difficulty getting it started again.

I dont know if its the fob battery (tried changing it but it doesnt seem to make any difference), the car battery, an ECU fault or perhaps the starter motor bendix may be sticking.

Can anyone help?

Kind regards

Alan Hill

hillbilly, from the sounds of things, you have a bad battery cable. But, before you go replacing stuff, take a multimeter and get access to the battery. Touch the multimeter to the lead posts of the battery (do not touch the clamps that hold the battery cables on there with the multimeter leads). Now, with the aide of a second person, have them attempt to start the car as the multimeter leads are still on the battery. Did the voltage drop below 11.0 VDC when cranking? If yes, then your battery is toast (yes, they can die all of a sudden). If no, then odds are your battery cables have a high resistance in them and they are not allowing enough current to flow to allow the starter to crank over the engine. If replacing the battery cables doesn't fix things, then you are most likely looking at a starter issue. But, 99% of the time, if you are having to choose between a starter and cables, it will be the cables.
