Steering and driver side front wheel problem
Strange problem... My 2003 X-Type that i recently purchased has american racing rims with low profile tires. I think they are stock size. Here is the problem, when going over large bumps the drivers side front tire catches the fender and has bent the inside fin down a bit... It doesn't seem to be bottoming out or anything. It doesn't seem to be close when fully cranked in either direction. I also have a clunking noise when going over bumps that i havent checked out yet...
Here is another strange thing that i haven't noticed on other cars before, if i crank the wheel fully in either direction while standing still, the nose of the car dips down about 2 inches. Not from the tires it seems but from something mechanical... I think! Not sure if this is normal but it seems strange.
I just bought it, so i am still finding all of the problems to fix!
Thanks,
John G

The front dipping at wheel lock indicates the caster angle may be borked. If I were you I'd check the lower control arms. These have liquid filled rear bushings that can, over time, leak out. If they're shot, this would change the caster angle and possibly explain the motorboat action when you turn from lock to lock. It would also make a definite ka-thunck in the front end. Good luck.
