Strange rubbing sound at speed
This just started a week ago... 2004 X-type 3.0 AWD... At speeds above 30mph when I veer to the right I get a noise (sounds like something rubbing and a vibration through the wheel)... if I go perfectly straight, nothing, just normal and same when I veer left, nothing... any thoughts would be great!

bearings are bad, as you turn right you put load on the bearing causing noise.
other then that is your front wheel brake caliper on tight? or your axle boot leaking grease? CV's joints.

I'd go with the wheel bearing as a first check. If you hear the noise while turning right I would suggest it's your left bearing casuing the problem.
The check for a worn CV joint is to put full lock on and drive slowly round. You'll normally hear a clunking sound.
I know my 2.5 had both rear bearings changed at around 90k miles.

I have had a problem was with the rear controll arms, it made a horendous grinding noise, you can check them by jacking the car up and seing if there is excessive play in the whole wheel / suspension area, grab the top and bottom of the wheel, like a wheel bearing check but notice if it the whole of the setup moving rather than just play in the wheel.
I have had a front wheel bearing go too similar noise, i found it hard to pinpoint which wheel was giving me jip, probably because i had more than one problem though

you can take the wheel, brake caliper & disc off and spin the wheel to see if you can year the noisey bearing, i mean it could be noise from the disc. I had disc that had corroded badly and had a pertruding lip that was rubbing the pad too.
I had my wheel front bearing done at my local garage, it was about £30 parts plus labour (circa 2 hours), they need to press the old bearing out and the new one in, and they have to be careful of the direction as there is part of the ABS sensor in the bearing, but i would have thought they could do it.

If you fancy doing it yourself you can get a whole verticle link assebly, you'd just have to split the hub;

If they are the rear bearings you buy a whole rear assembly it is £90 a side from britishparts (or your local motor factors) they don't have it on their website but you can phone them, this one would not require having the old bearing pressed out so any mechanic would do this.
