you ran up on a curb parking more than likely hitting the steel guard that protects the trans shift cable more than likely. this can bend it keeping it from going into park since you did it DRIVING. Take out the 3 8mm bolts and will shift again unless you bent the shaft in the trans and hammer the cover back out with a ball peen hammer. This may not be your issue but first thing that came to mind as have seen it more than few times over the years

Further info
Sorry I meant 2010 xf.
I was parked at the side of the street but wanted to go in the opposing direction.
I pulled out to do a 3 point turn. When I went to put the car in reverse the gear selector
knob was stuck. There was no way to put it in reverse and I was now blocking traffic. I had to drive up the sidewalk to turn around and then continued home.
I checked things over at home and had to turn off the car. I tried disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it, hoping
it would reset itself to no avail. I had a mechanic come out who couldn't fix it either. I researched this on YouTube and people have had a similar problem
but normally it gets stuck in park. I contacted the local Jag dealer and he had heard of this before. With the long weekend they were too busy to look at it for some time. The car has not had a proper diagnostic but I ordered a new gearbox unit anyway. It is supposed to arrive in Toronto today and then it will be shipped to me. The car has been in my driveway since last Thursday. I presently have 3 mechanics trying to help me out here but none are specific Jaguar mechanics.
I will try changing the gearbox module myself when it arrives. I just hope the transmission has put itself into Park when I turned it off.

This seems logical, although I certainly don't remember the undercarriage having the opportunity of being hit.
The only time I drove up a sidewalk was when it was already stuck in drive and I had no other option. (I drove carefully and slowly)
I will look at that as well. I just wish I checked this out before ordering a new part. Haha.
Thanks

well that makes all the difference in the world to have correct model info.
on the electric pop up shifters that is a failure requiring a replacement of the entire assembly. Sometimes will start functioning again after sitting and or try disconnecting the battery do a hard reboot of the car by holding the disconnected positive cable to a ground source for 30 seconds. (same thing as unplugging your modem from the wall or restarting you phone and pc)
then hook the cable back up. you should still replace it because itll do it again. You will have to reset clock, wndows and parking brake after battery diisconnect
