Default Sump Washer

I'm new to these cars. Bought this 2003 X-Type last year and it had been dealer serviced before I got it. I'm not a high mileage driver, only 5 to 7 thousand a year, so I'll be changing oil etc at leastyearly. My question right now is, What is a Sump Washer that is listed with the oil and filter change. Is this a DIY job?
I'm a certified car nut so I'm not afraid to tackel any job that is doable. I've already had my initial experience with a dealership, ended up replacing the battery. The sticker shock has worn off now but I want to stay away from them as much as possible. I'm going to look for a repair shop locally to do things I can't when any problems come up. But I want to do those things that are possible myself. The closest dealers are in Omaha 50 miles away. I won't return to the one I already used but may try the other in the future if I can't find someone here in town that I think can do exceptable work.

Sump washer? There is the drain plug that has a washer on it and the oil filter. The sump is what jag calls the oil pan.
So probably referring to the rubber washer for the plug.

That's what I sort of figured. In the Chilton manual it described the oil change as replacing the oil, filter and drain plug washer. I will be doing this myself using synthetic oil and a good filter. I was going to do the change itthis month but may wait until June. We will be out of the country all of May so the car will be parked. It won't get many miles the rest of this month at the price of gas now, $3.44/gallon earlier this week. BTW the mileage on it is 57XXX.
