Switch Fuel pump with Ford Taurus. Good Idea?
I found this forum browsing the internet for ideas concerning my situation and it's been very informative. My X-type's fuel pump went down (no fuel at rail) and l don't have the money for a full replacement of the assembly ($1000+). l drove it too many times near empty and burned out the pump. My mechanic diagnosed my car and he suggests two options. A. Disassemble the fuel pump assembly and only replace the pump inside (praying for zero shortages in assembly). B. Replace pump assembly with a Ford Taurus's (his preferred method) He has performed similar work with BMWs by installing chevy fuel pumps and mimicking the psi necessary to drive the fuel to the engine. I am very concerned about the long term effects of this procedure though and not to mention all the car's sensors involved. He says the car is by all means a ford and will be removing the pump for my inspection tomorrow evening. My car has 75,000 miles on it currently and l want to go the safest AND cheapest option available. Thanks guys for your help

Will,
The fuel pump assembly is $288 here...

Replacing the pump (only) should work too... if you can find one. The X-type does share a few parts with Ford and Lincoln LS. If you figure out a cheaper solution, let us know!

This is not a pleasant endeavor.... From what I remember, the pump is not an 'in-line pump,' the pump resides INSIDE the tank. It is a messy job. Also WillChill, I suggest looking into a 2000+ Mercury cougar or a 2000+ Ford Contour Sport or Mazad6 V6, and cross-reference the part numbers, likely they both utilize the SAME pump. Ford/Mazda parts are exorbitantly cheaper than Jaguar(ahem,Ford) parts.

putting in a different fuel pump shouldnt cause any issues as long as it has a equal or higher flow rate. ( i think thats how pumps are measured)
in the talon track car we built we put a toyota supra turbo fuel pump in because its flow rate was a lot higher...this car had a lot of other mods (including a 175 shot) but basically as long as it fits in you should be fine.
the fuel pump can be compared to a sub pump (submergable) that you may find in your basement foundation of your house.(depending on where your house is and climate).. keeping your fuel level up will help keep your pumps from burning out, reason being is that your fuel acts like a lubricant and coolant for the pump.
