If I'm not mistaken Jaguar XP and similar vendors sell them already done..this way you could always go back to Chrome...

Dude buy the one from JaguarXP here
Dont get an insert...since you'll have to cut up your original and to change inserts out will take about an hour. Trust me I did that!
With the whole mesh you not only save the original but can swap them out within 5 minutes tops.

Sanding a mesh grille sounds like a complete pain in the butt. Why not just:
a) clean with a de-greaser
b) use a self-etching primer
c) paint black
You'll probably get a more consistent finish that way with less effort. Make sure you pick a good metal primer, and a compatible top coat paint.
