Throttle Body Replacement Needed - Should I abandon my Jag?
I've a 2003 X-Type 2.5L. I just got an estimate to fix a thottle pedal sensor problem: $1800. The car had been falling into the "limp move" problem mentioned at https://www.jaguarforums.com/m_44143/tm.htm . Between this repair, an oil pan replacement, and a new set of badly-needed tires, I'll be out $4k. The car has 112k miles on it, and is worth maybe $4.5k if it is fixed up. Opinions on if I should invest the money to repair it? Ditch it while I can? Is there a way I can get a throttle body for cheaper than $1800? Or somehow repair the current one?
Your advice is much appreciated.

They want $1800 just for the TB itself? Thats quite a bit more than the $1200 the Jag dealer told me when I called when I needed one. I need to replace my oil pan gasket as well. Haven't been driving the Jag because I think the drivers side wheel bearing hub is damaged...sounds like when I grind ice cubes in my blender....Even though I have these issues...I couldn't see myself getting rid of my X. I love it...HA. I have about 80K miles on mine.I didnt go with buying a used TB..i felt i would likley run into this situation again, so Id rather spend more on a new one. I dont think you can repair it, I think its an eletronics/sensor issue. I haven't thrown away my old TB, just in case there really is a way it can still work.Hopefully the guys can chime in and give you piece of advice to help you narrow down your decision of keeping or letting the X go.

I don't think the DIY replacement is all that tough..you could get one of these for half the dealer's price and put it in yourself...

i think the prices went up on all parts in Febuary. $1800 sounds right. where do you live? how much are you going to sell it for? do you like the car? what other car would you get? these are some questions that might help you make up your mind.

Good find Dennis with a used Throttle B for roughly $800. Sounds like a good deal especially with the 3 year warranty.
and if you factor in 4 new tires, you may not be in a big bind after all. I got all 4 brand new tires from the tire rack for little over $300 and they are 17 inch. No problems and they handle great.
Therefore the damage may only be roughly $1,500 depending on the labor to install.
At that price, I would fix it and drive it. What else could go wrong? I always cross my fingers when I drive my jag!

I'm not too familliar but is the TB assembly on these things spring-driven or electronic?
If the latter, perhaps not DIY, but if spring-driven, definitely!
I would check your local bone-yards first before shelling even $800 out.

that price of $1800 seems close, i just had mine replaced a month and a week back it was around $1400. then traded it in exactly one week later for a new car. I had alot of other issues with my jag and got fed up.
If you are in a good situation where your jag isnt your daily driver, look around for a TB for cheap. Tires are cheap if you search the tire rack. If you get the OEM Conti's then you will be shelling out some $$$.
You are going to have to repair the TB if you sell it or not, if you want money for it 2003 X with your miles is worth $8000 in perfect condition. so with it not moving out of limp mode it will be hard to sell.
I dont think you will be able to repair the old TB cause i have heard/read/saw that the sensor is what fails in the TB and you cant buy that seperate you need the whole thing. but i read hear some one took it off and cleaned it and it gave about two weeks before limp mode happend again.

Someone's making a lot of money selling throttle bodies for $1800, $1200, or even $800. Just did a search and found several for $300 to $400 here...

What fails on these TB's and what on earth makes them so expensive?

They are fully electronically controlled. The TPS normally goes bad. It has 2 tracks reading opposite of each other. If they do not corellate correctly, car will go into limp home as a safety feature.
You can replace it yourself. 4 10mm bolts and a couple of coolant hoses. Make sure you hook up the coolant hoses correct way otherwise bye bye engine.

My 2004 X had a throttle body replaced at 25,000. I've had my Jag for almost a month. ILOVE this car. I'm in it everyday and I can't wait to get in it.After driving a Dodge Ram for 10 years, I'm in love with driving again.
It's still early but I can't imagine NOT having this car. I love this car. I LERVE this car.

FJT, do you just toss the bad ones? Can I get a bad one for shipping/handling cost?
