Our transmissions are sealed for life

Yes, the X-Type Workshop Manual (Auto Transmission section) states the box is sealed for life and fluid replacement is unneccessary - except for instances of severe duty. In which case, fluid exchange is recommended every 30,000 miles.
See the attached extracted page from X-Type Workshop Manual;

In your sig you state a standard which I presume your car has a manual transmission. If so I would change fluid out ~60k miles. Definitely refill using a quality gear oil. I would suggest Redline as they make fluid specifically for manual transmission/transaxles. I have run MTL and MT-85 in my Jag before with an improvement in shifting. More importantly change out the transfer case fluid at the same time.

I have my car in the shop right now and asked about changing out the transmission fluid. They told me it would be around $400.00 the fluid is 25 bucks a quart. I have an automatic and inquired because I heard the transmissions have a tendency to go bad on the x-types. I welcome anyone's $.02....

I'm still debating having the tranny completely flushed by the dealer, do it myself (drain and refill), or simply leave it alone.
I've already posted about this, but my main concern is the issue I'm having that randomly pops up everyone once in a while where the transmission is slow to engage. I don't drive the car hard and she's only got 50K (I'm the original owner) on the clock.

Hi all, just weighing in on this post. 8 months ago I got a good deal on an 05 XType Wagon 3.0 AWD automatic with 69k miles. Minor maintenance here and there (I posted about some scary news, but have only had to go through with regular car maintenance like break pads and spark plugs etc.)
however, having been suspicious of this “lifetime trans” crap, I replaced my transmission fluid merely for preventative maintenance. Nothing prompted me to be concerned about the state of the transmission. However, as the horror story goes, I’ve lost reverse , and my mechanic told me the old fluid came out thicker than clam chowder.
anyway, for what it’s worth, 14 years later the lifetime fluid is garbage. Service it early and service it often.

Agree that the lifetime fluid is a fantasy. When servicing these transmissions it has several large bolts that make it turning the drain plug a guessing game. I've read stories on here of people turning wrong bolts and loosing Reverse.
I doubt changing the tranny fluid is what caused the loss of the REVERSE gear.

In my thread of changing transmission fluid with pics, I have a discussion, pictures, and DEFINITIVE ANSWER to the question of which is the level check plug and which is the one that releases the reverse band. It is counter intuitive, thus why even "professional" transmission places screw it up.
