Tranny rebuild
Well tonight my tranny fianlly went out. I can crank the car and put it in gear and then nothing, no reverse, no forward just engine revs. I am looking at getting a rebuilt unit, a used one out of the junk yard or rebuilding it myself. I got two questions. Are there any reputable rebuilt trannies out there? Has anyone on the forum ever rebuilt one and how did it go? I am very mechanically inclined but I have never rebuilt a transmission, how hard can it be? Oops that's three questions, my bad.

RE: Tranny rebuild
Grim, rebuilding it isn't all that hard from what I hear (haven't personally done it myself either, YET). But, you will find that you will need a puller to get some of the bearings and what not off of the shafts. So, keep that in mind before you tear into things. If you have access to a hydraulic puller, then you are set. But, if you don't, I think you will find that doing a job like this correctly will be next to impossible.
Not to ask the silly question, but, do you have sufficient fluid in the tranny. Most trannies will free spin like you are seeing if the fluid level gets too low. Something to check before ripping into the tranny.

My car is an 02 with a 3.0 in it. just went over 70k
Chris, I have had problems during the last month or so with it slipping out of gear, I did have the fluid checked about the same time and it was good. Haven't seen any signs of laeking so it probably just went out. I have acess to a repair shop, I'll check with them on the press, I think they do have one though.

Ok, since it's an 02, i highly recommend you do a search and try to find one out of a 2005 or 06. If not, you can get yours rebuild...as for doing it yourself...if you have rebuilt trannies before i would say ok..go for it...but if this is your first tranny...your best be is to have someone else do it. I've been playing around with turbo 400's and 350 trannies in my youger days, rebuilt many of them.....when i went into my jags tranny few years back....i was lost....too many items to deal with and not enough know-how....
If you're looking to save money and have the know-how..you can remove the tranny yourself and take it to the repair facility. Should save you about 1K.

I"m with Racer all the way on this issue. Did few trannys before and belive me the first timeI did, I wet my pants, I spent more timetaking the tranny out and putting back and taking it down again.Automatic transmition for the jaguar can be so complicated for a first timer I may add, not to discourage you but speaking from experience. Get the facts first before you dissmantel your tranny, get an accurate diagnose whats is wrong and this case you just might save a ton of bucks. Check your shifter linkage.... lever..... etc. An alert on your dashboard gauges should have a warning that reads "gearbox fault" message at all time if your tranny is fried totally.

Racerx82, Well getting a new version would be nice but my tranny is the old one, they split the versions in 02 but I didn't get lucky. Which means I have to use the 02 model, unless someone has a work around. I asked in another thread but got no solid answers.
Baguioboy, it did have a transmission fault light come on and it gave a code of PO740, it would go off as soon as the car was turned off.
I think I will go with a used one since I can't find a good deal on a rebuilt one.
