Transfer Case Click In Reverse Only
#21
Thanks Colt. These prices are sub-1000 USD so it's not as bad as I thought. I'm hoping a local salvage yard comes across one so I can just go pick it up and maybe see the car it came out of.
The search is on. I'll contact jag_genius and see if he has any for sale still. I would trust a forum member way more than an ebay dealer.
A question: How is it that this problem is seen only in reverse gear? Is the TC engineered so that some of the bearings are only turning in reverse gear?
Here's another question: I don't go in reverse MUCH. Maybe I should take JagXType620's advice and "Ride it till the wheels fall off!" I mean really, this thing might go for 20,000 miles before the TC breaks. Whaddaya think?
Thanks!

Good Questions..I have no good answers..it maybe a crap shoot...But I'm still thinking that it is a half shaft CV joint inner or the outer...Because the inside of the TC has no idler gears for reverse that could click in one direction or the other...Best of luck to you to solve this one.
I really appreciate you guys thinking about this with me. Much obliged.

Anybody find the answer to this problem? Lol..
I have the same thing..
But I was thinking it was the flex disc.. I'm pretty sure our cars have them because of the driveshaft ..
But its as i press the gas.. if I clutch in then the sound disappears.. if i roll in gear at low speed I can still hear it but its faint.

Honestly i have never had a TC not do this since i have owned the car new. It starts to make the noise in reverse and then makes the noise in forward. It only does it when under stress. I have had 3 transfer cases in my car. The first one was stock. the dealer decided to replace it at the mistake of proshaft noise, then the second one started making the noise and i drove the hell out of it in the snow after changing the oil and it grenaded. And when i say grenaded i mean there was pieces everywhere haha. But that was goping in reverse from a snow covered driveway spinning all 4 wheels to the dry pavement with the back wheels stopping suddenly. Whoops. That one had over 50,000 miles on it before destruction and it had run out of oil numerous times bc they seem to like to leak on the right output shaft to the front passenger wheel. The current transfer case has been making the noise since new and its approaching 50,00 miles and two winters and constant high speeds and hard shifts form the manual trans and never gets a rest. I just make sure the oil is maintained and drive the holy living sh*t out of the car. Now with the car at 100,000 miles it runs like new, shifts like new, and rides like new with very little problems. Run the **** out of these cars. appearantly they like it. Everytime i start babying it is when i start with the constant repairs. DRIVE IT LIKE YA STOLE IT! haha.
