Transfer Case Leak

Hi everyone, I have what seems to be a common problem amongst x types. I have a leak from the transfer case . I've read a bunch about leaks from the tc but am still not sure what my next step should be. I purchased the car last month and did not notice a leak until now. I brought the car to a reputable shop and they stated that the leak is from the vent not the seal as I suspected. The previous owner had the TC replaced in 2014 .Not sure how many miles have been put on the car since then. It's at 54k now .Could it be a possibility of them overfilling the case 4 years ago? The leak is a newer looking honey colored oil and drips directly on the exhaust. I don't believe it leaks if the car is just sitting. Just while driving.

It is possible that it is overfilled but it should have been leaking for quite awhile. You can follow the link below to a thread that shows where the actual drain plug is located. You can remove the drain plug and check to see if it was overfilled. The correct filling is when it doesn't flow out of the fill hole.

If it is coming out of the vent hole, chances are it was just overfilled. However, it would not have been leaking too long. Seeing as you recently got the car could the previous owner just changed the fluid before it was sold? If so, that would be a temporary thing and it certainly would not be an issue from when teh transfer case was changed 4 years ago.

Right now I would pull the plug and let it drain. It will not empty, to do that you have to lift the car 2 feet in the air from the side opposite the plug. Any fluid coming out would be overfilled. If you get 2 different looking fluids then the transmission seal was damaged when the new case was installed a may be leaking into the case causing the overfill condition.

Yeah, I agree with Avern, easiest diagnostics is open the drain (particularly looking for different and/or odd colored fluid indicating seal damage/leak) see if more than a trickle comes out. If so probably overfilled. I did my change a bit differently than the tip the car one way to try and empty (never gets emptied) then tip it the other way to fill, but to check follow Avern's advice.
