Default Transfer case to propshaft gasket

Hey all,

I've just bought a 2004 x type and am experiencing the whining noise at various speeds, nothing new there.

I've done some poking around and it seems the transfer case is lubricated with mostly iron filings with a smidge of oil. None dribbled out when I removed the drain plug so it's been parked for a while. I finally had chance to drop the propshaft today and when I did, I noticed there was no gasket between the transfer case output and the propshaft. It looks as if the oil had leaked into the gap between the two and been thrown out radially.

My question is, would the problem be the missing gasket or is the issue with the sealing inside the transfer case which is allowing oil down the output splines? If I can fix the leak then hopefully I can salvage the transfer case with a flush and fill!

Thanks in advance.
