Is Transfer Case 'REALLY' a widespread problem???
I think the forums tend to highlight the transfer case problem because people tend to join and post only when there is a 'problem.'
I would love to hear from anyone who has NOT had a transfer case grenade on them in this thread.
Maybe we should take a poll of those who have and those who have-not....

I drove off road in Jeeps for years, never had a T-Case explode, and I beat the heck out of all my vehicles off road. Never drove home without some sort of damamge. The only times I ever heard of it happening was during what is called drive line wind up. That happens when the front and back wheels are spinning at the same speed and the TC cant compensate and grenades. We've got traction control so that's not supposed to happen, but I can see if you've got too much HP and really sticky tires that the pressure in the TC might cause it to grenade, but we dont run anywhere near enough HP.

No problems yet with TC

72,000+ on our '03 2.5 auto = no problems with the TC yet. I'm going to check it as soon as weather warms a bit more, will probably change it and the rear differential. I'm thinking of changing out the transmission too. Although I really hate to touch things that are working great.
Only things that have failed so far, cooling fan controller and left headlight leveler. oh ya, also left front fog light. Replaced fan controller with a used unit and adjusted headlight to correct level not planning to mess with the mechanism also not worried about the fog light either.

04 2.5 SE auto. 68700mls. No problems no noise. Still on original fluid, due to be changed next month. I don't thrash it, and now only used once or twice a week. My local indie told me they have more trouble with TC's with viscous coupling fitted than ones without. Oil stays cleaner much longer. Mine has no VC.

Good point about the VC

2003 with 110K here, no TC issues at all and a daily driver. I put about 18K on it within the last year and nothing, although I rarely push the car. Had it since 77K, but previous owners and mechanics have noted no TC issues. I know it was at least moved when the shop replaced the oil pan gasket and seems to still be going strong. If the transfer case lasts another year without failure I'm satisfied.

Your buddies sti transfer case went huh? Might want to send him back for a refund since subbies don't have TCs. Guessing his front dif went which likely means the car was used quite hard. The sti is nearly bullet proof. Subbies and auto trannies don't agree if not cared for properly.
Now I once had a Nissan PU that went 30k and 4 years without an oil change and it still rotted away long before the engine gave out. I do agree that proper maint. and regular fluid changes are a wise idea for anything with a bearing, gear, valve or piston.

No TC problems here either. I got my '03 daily driver 2 years ago with 35,100 miles on it, and I've added another 21,000 miles to that. I will be changing the TC fluid when she goes in for her 60,000 mile checkup sometime this spring.
Reading the posts so far it looks to me like everyone is saying "no problems here." Maybe we all just love to worry?
