The transfer case was shredded! The outside of the case had a giant hole in it too. You could see all the busted gears inside. The mechanic said it was the worst he ever saw and was surprised that there was no warning or weird noises before it happened. It cost $1645 to get it replaced with a used one but since it runs perfect. The check engine light was on before but now it's not. I'm interested to see if it drives better in the snow because last year it didn't seem like the AWD really worked much. My car would fishtail and slide or get stuck a lot easier than I would expect a car to with AWD. It's my first AWD car so I don't know though.

@Jaguarboy21,
You'll need a friend, but it's an easy fix. Shift the transmission into "N", undo the bolt from the gear selector cable. Now, have a friend hold the gearshifter back about 2mm from the "N", and tighten up the bolt again. Bamo, fixed. (Unless something happened with the Neutral Safety switch, in which case we can get you fixed on that too.)
