Default Transmission slips

I have an '03 X-Type 3.0 and it has an intermittent problem .... while cruising (last time at 70mph), I gave it a little gas to overtake and the engine revs increase but the road speed doesn't rise ... pushing the gas pedal makes the engine rev just like a slipping clutch would in a manual car ....

I moved the selector from D to 4 and back, but the slip continued ... did that a few times with same effect .. then slipped it from D to N and back and that seemed to clear the problem .. no dash messages and no OBD codes thrown .. any ideas out there ???

You'll be flagging a PO734-PO735 code soon indicating a gear 4 and/or gear 5 incorrect ratios.
In short, what slivercat said,lol.

Chrislb, Did you end up needing a new trans? If so do you mind letting us know what the total bill was? My 2002 has done the same thing a few times the past week and I'm just trying to get an idea for how much it's going to set me back. Thanks.

New rebuilt tranny from Jaguar, plus installation, is going to run you around $4,000. If you have the oil pan gasket fixed while they are in there (and you should), and if you need a new downpipe, which you probably will when they can't get your old one off, then you are looking at about $5k.

Ask me how I know.

Have them do a rear main engine seal when the trans it out. After you get it repaired I recommend servicing the trans every 30K, it seems excessive, but it usually saves $$$ in the long run.
