Upgrading Wheel Size
Guys
Thanks for all yourhelp on tyres. Moving on in a grateful and positive fashion. An option, can I upgrade the 16" wheels to 17" or even 18"?
Mine is 2004 model so I need to check the wheel-arch liners for total clearance.
I know that this will mess-up the speedometer and gearing. Can the speedo be recalibrated without an exchange? Anything else to consider?
regards

RE: Upgrading Wheel Size
Hey Langdale, why not check out the x type FAQ quick links if you haven't done so already? There's a helluva lot of info posted there on rims/ tyres/ offsets and upgrades etc etc.
There's so many members here that have had stock 17" and upgraded to 18" mostly without too many problems, and some to 19"s usually with a lot of rubbing on the wheel liners involved, if I remember rightly.
If you have the 16" rims I'd say you would probably be good to go to 17".....there's some lovely stock rim styles if you go to 17" too unless you'd rather go aftermarket?
Just my thoughts Langdale, I'm sure some of the guys who have done these mods will be along soon to offer better advice.
All the best
Jim

RE: Upgrading Wheel Size
langdale, the big thing that you want to keep in mind is the overall tire diameter. As long as you are close between what you have now and what you are going with (within 1"), all should be fine. The only qualifiers I will put on that statement is that it is assuming your new rims have the same basic offset/backspacing as your factory rims and you are going with a tire that is the same width or slightly wider (up to 1" wider). So, running say a 225/50R16 tire and a 225/40R17 (essentially the same size as it relates to diameter) would be interchangeable on your car.
You can sit down with a tire calculator (tons of them on the internet, do a search for "tire calculator") and then input your current tire size and what you are looking at running. That will tell you the difference between the two tires.

Thermo makes my point for me with his usual technical proficiency. Tostate another way,as long as you reduce the height of the tire as you increase the size of the rim (wheel) to keep the same or very similar ratio, you will be ok. I went from 205/55 16's to 225/45 17's. No rubbing. Be mindful that the larger rim and less tire = harsher ride, as there is less tire to cushion. I would caution going to 18's and larger unless your roads are in good condition.
Backspacing and hub sizes need to be considered. When Iupsized to 17's and the supplier (discount tire)provided a hub ring spacer to ensure the wheel would fit the hub correctly.

My set-up is 19x8 45 offsetwheels w/ 215/35/19 tires and a stock suspension. No rubbing. I think this is most optimal set-up if you are looking to upgrade to a 19 inch wheel. 20's are too large.
As mentioned before, if you are looking to upgrade to 18's or 19's make sure the roads in your city are not too harsh. I live in California and the roads not harsh at all, even through the numerous mountain ranges surrounding us.
Hope this helps!

I agree, they do seem to fill out the wheel well quite nicely. That's always been something I wasn't too fond of with the stock X - the big gap, mostly on the rear wheels, between the rubber and the fender. My 17's fill them out better, but not as good as those 18's look.

Thanks again for brilliant and expert advice.
Jim, thanks for the pointer. I have up to now used the "Search" to locate forum topics, like the upgrading of wheels, ( unsuccessfully I might add!) not aware that the "FAQ's" werethe better method. I don't know if it is just me but I wonder if the header could be clearer?

If you change the size of tire you change the overall diameter and there is no reason to have anything calibrated.
What kind of wheel are you looking for? You can get some nice wheels from tirerack.com that sometimes look very similar to rims offered on jag straight from jag.
These were my 18's

To be honest for the cost you should look up tirerack. They have similar styles to the stock wheels and you could get all 4 with tires for probably what rims would cost alone.
They have the rial porto 18's with the general exclaim uhp which is rated their 4th best tire mounted shipped and balanced for $1190.50 shipped to your zip code.

225/40ZR18 XL General Exclaim UHP
Blackwall In Stock 4 $92.00 $368.00
Grand Total:
