Guys this is serious **** for we who are driving these cars past the warranty period.
It seems the X-type has shims to adjust the valves.. they are not hydraulic tappets .... they need to be adjusted like the old days. The question is when? how often? . and when one of us finds out that it is too late.. the damage will be astronomically expensive........ I dont want it to be me...

yes the link is a great resource. I can see clearly the HOW TO...... I just am not clear on the WHEN. The story you linked too is on an engine out of the car. and it has the timing chain off and the cams out. really a large deal of work.
I think I would pull the valve cover and see if I can get a shim out without dissassembling any of the timing chain stuff.
Really we all need to know two things... first how often is this needed to be done.
second and more importantly is if the wear in the system makes the gap smaller or bigger over time.
Some cars wear the parts and the gap gets bigger, and if you dont adjust the worst thing is a noisy valve train. Other cars the valve pounds itself into the cylinder head and the gap gets smaller. Worst case thenis a total engine meltdown with a burned valve that drops onto the piston and kills EVERYTHING.

When- I'd say every 80K or 100K miles... probably the latter. Although that doesn't really mean anything because the engine on the Jaguar 3.0L blog had only 15K miles on it and one of the valves needed to be re-shimmed because it was out of spec. 15K miles and the valves needed an adjustment. That could have been caused by the wreck the car was in, but I really don't see how the impact from a crash could cause the valve adjustment to be off.
A simple compression or leakdown test should tell you whether or not your valves are seating properly. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it unless you spend a lot of time over 5000 rpm. The valvetrain on these cars seems to be pretty descent- haven't heard of any valve related engine failures yet.... But these cars are just now starting to get old so all the little problems are going to start showing up over the next couple years...
