Varying coolant temp & vibration under load
Hi All,
My father in law has just bought a 2008 X-Type 2.2 D auto, which unfortunately has arrived with a couple of faults.
Firstly, the coolant temperature does not reach normal and only gets above 1/4 when under load. We have replaced the thermostat complete with the plastic housing, with minimal improvement, which surprised me. I believe that there is a second thermostat that controls the water flow to the oil heat exchanger. He has read it can cause the issue so we plan to swap that this weekend, although it seems odd to me. I have checked the temperature with my OBD interface / torque Pro app and it agrees with the gauge, ie water temp 60 - 80 degrees.
The other issue is a vibration when accelerating hard from low speed eg 20 mph at low revs. It is felt through the steering wheel and generally , but not there under any other conditions, including hard acceleration at higher speed or with more revs.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Regards,
John

John, yes, there are 2 thermostats in the diesel engined cars. So, it is possible that your problem is with either one of those thermostats. Do that change and then lets see what you have.
As for the vibration, I can't help you with that one. Hopefully one of the guys with a diesel variant like yours will be able to help out. My initial thought is that the turbo is not making sufficient boost and you are getting some feedback from the engine. But, that is just a guess on my part.

Just to round up, replacing the second thermostat cured the cold / inconsistent operation temperature, with the needle now steady just below halfway and reading ~88 degrees C on my OBD. So just the vibration to sort, although I think my father in law is ignoring that for the time being as it doesn't appear with his very relaxed driving style.....
