Want an x type? Expect repairs!
Just wanted to create a little thread showcasing what my baby jag needed done to get it running right at 158,000 miles..
Brakes/rotors all around - $400
Valve cover gaskets and spark plugs replacement - $600
Wheels (originals bent) - $500
Wheel bearings (L and R) - $200
Radiator, water pump and thermostat replacement - $730
And I still need control arms, o2 sensor and lights replaced on the side..
Reliable? Not at all.. Worth the investment? Definitely!

In comparison.. my 2002 classic X-Type, 95,000miles, over the past year has had:
Radiator replaced and water pump gaskets remade approx. £400
Front Brake Pads £14.00
Oil & Filters (with plugs and fuel filter costed in but not fitted yet) £150
Four new Tyres £240
Needing to be done:
Rear Speaker replaced
A/C Drain tube clearance
Dodgy Driver Door lock serviced
To be honest it starts every day (touch wood), even with EML on occasionally still drives fine, it is more reliable and has been for longer than a few Fords and Vauxhalls I have had over the years :-)
Mind you now I've said that ..... sigh :-)

I sympathise with the cost but repairs?
Bent wheels are not uncommon and a lot of people out there don't even know they've got them, I had 2 on my last X~Type and I shuddered, jaguar alloys are sensitive, alike every other brand and to be honest I blame the Aberdeenshire council for not filling in potholes AHA, or was I too blame for driving over them?
Take a look in any supermarket and just gaze in awe at the state of wheels people use as their daily drivers, it's scary!!!
I see brand new cars with wiped out alloys quite often!
The same people probably when asked say they believe they, themselves are careful or sensible or Considerate drivers!
They obviously don't count the amount of time they hit kerbs, vehicles or any roadside object, but I am glad they did because the next obstacle down the line could be me or you?
My point is that some of these repairs you have mentioned could be put down to wear and tear depending on how you and the previous owner treated/treat your car and obviously, weather and conditions along with routine and preventative maintenance all play a part in determiningjust how your car is today?
BUT, I am reassured by your very last comment and seeing that your car is a certain age, I would say reliable yes and possibly expensive just like a charming Woman, full of surprises!

Not reliable? Geez, I will have to disagree on that. You don't say what year your car is, but just about everything on your list I would consider wear items that could affect any car. And if they are all original for a car with 155K miles that is pretty good. Plus, from the mileage I would guess your car is at least 10 years old. After that period of times stuff just starts to wear out. Wheels? Like Stu said, those can go anytime. Plus, if you do not know the maintenance history some of those should maybe have been taken care of a while back. The good news is it sounds like you are all sorted now. Hopefully you will get a number of trouble free years now. Enjoy.

I agree with Alfadude. A reliable car is one you can count on to work whenever you need it. No car is indestructible or maintenance-free, especially not when it's done more than 100 000 miles. Small stuff will start to wear and go wrong eventually.
Mine has pretty much always worked and always started and so on, yet I've still had the joy of spending something like 4000 USD on my car in the two years I've owned it, and that's just on maintenance, not insurance/petrol/MOT/carwashes/exhaust/addons...

Bye bye X-Type
X-Type changed to Nissan Murano today.
Had the car for about 2 years. It had typical X-Type issues.
- Door handle had to be fixed twice (DIY thanks to this forum).
- swaybar bushings had to be changed front and rear (DIY)
- other bushings in rear suspension
- front rotors and pads (DIY)
- rear brake pads
- headlight adjusters were broken on both lights.
- oil leak from oil pan
- right dipped beam lost power
- rear left brake light bulb base broken
- drive shaft bearing making noises
Thankfully no problems with transfer case..
Main reason for changing the X was useless AWD system. It was the -04 model without viscous TC and without ESP. Never buy one if you need AWD..
Car still wasn´t expensive to maintain because I did all work myself and you can find a lot places to get parts relatively cheap.
Nice timeless design, good to drive (except for AWD) and decent MPG.

Yea $600 for the spark plug change? You need to get a tool set. I changed the plugs myself for about $30. The intake gaskets are only like $12. I'm not saying it's a super easy job, but a little reading on the forum and about 2 hours of wrenching and swearing would be worth it.

I fail to understand your comment with the "useless AWD?"
The X Type is not a utility vehicle and never will be and you cannot compare it to the Nissan Murano.
The Jaguar all wheel drive was designed for a brilliant road handling sedan/saloon and it does more than that!!
I would also put my last pound/dollar/sheckel/dinar on it that when my 2.5 2005 X-Type (same as your useless system!) was my life-saver in 2010 and I had 6 weeks driving to and from work arduously along a perilous 3 inch-solid thick ice narrow road surrounded by forest and intrusive branches, piles of snow and ditches either side, TREACHEROUS!
I came out at the other end, your Nissan would have been either in :
a) the trees
b) stuck
or... c) the ditch
The all wheel drive is fantastic for a road car and if I wanted to drive through a ploughed field, I have a Jeep.
The cars mentioned have a totally different design and specification for a reason and the Jaguar all wheel drive is as good as how you drive it!
I wish you well with the Nissan, on or off the road, my baby stays on it FWIW

Stu, as he said he had a car without a viscous coupling nor DSC, so basically an AWD that directs all torque to whichever wheel starts spinning first. Thus; useless in slippery conditions, worse than 2WD. Those units are fairly rare as Jaguar eventually (but not immediately) realized that removing the VC made it necessary for DSC to be made standard equipment.

All in all. It seems I spend around 2-3K each year for the past 3 years. I still like the car though. It drives very smooth and is generally in excellent condition.
