No prior steam cleaning was done, its in its normal/original condition...... yes, the Aussie climate (urban areas at least) is much kinder to Cars - which is why you will find many cars on the road here that are 20+ years and most in good condition.

Why can't you just add to your transfer case oil? Draining it seems to be complicated, its not like engine oil, it is just gear lube. For all I know the transfer case could be empty?

Because, without opening it up and letting what's in it drain out, you have no way to determine how much is in there (it only has a drain plug on the bottom). So just drain it and refill with new fluid.
