What kind of glue for a bumper?
Hi,
I'm new and I have searched around far and wide, but can't seem to find the answer to my question. What is the best glue to use on a plastic jaguar bumper?
To explain further.....
I have a Jaguar X-Type Estate, 2.0D first registered in Sep 04. Recently, my wife and I were driving along a country road, and suddenly the skirt at the bottom of the bumper which holds the reverse parking sensors decided to fly off, severing the wiring to the sensors. We of course U-turned and went back to pick up the skirt/inspect the damage.
Upon closer inspection, this is because the little inserts on the bottom of the bumper that the skirt slots into have all cracked/snapped off, causing the skirt to fly off at speed. The ones further underneath the car are intact, but the ones at the rear have completely gone (all bar one anyway). This looks to be usual wear and tear as the car is 12 years old.
Now the wiring I can fix, but to fix the skirt back to bumper I need either
(a) a new bumper (expensive and hard to find with our 'Ice blue' colour code)
(b) to glue the skirt back (once I have fixed the wiring) onto the bumper.
After doing a bit of googling on glues, I'm more confused than ever. However, it would seem that the type of glue largely depends on the type of plastic that the bumper is composed of. Although I have a [very] basic understanding of materials science, I have no idea what plastic the bumper is made of/which glue works best with said type of bumper.
Hence my post here, does anyone know either the type of plastic, or a good (probably epoxy) glue that has worked for them on an X-type bumper of similar age without falling apart again some months later? We are off to France with our baby son in a few weeks and I'd like to do a good job of repairing this before we go...
Any advice greatly received. Apologies if this has been posted before, I just couldn't find it!
Cheers
Joe
