What offset? Jeremy help me out!
Jeremy,
I know you are the wheel fitment guru. I have done STANCED fitment on most of my rides but my jag will be my daily driver and I don't want to go extreme with this car. I am planning to do Coventry Whitley wheels 20x8.5 but unsure whether I should do the et42 or et35. Can I do et35 without ANY modification on a 2006 x type sport on HR springs and 235/30/20?

I know I'm not who you directly asked but I figured I'd throw in my experience anyway. I have 19x9.5s with a 40 offset, 245/35/19s all around. I do have KW coilovers, but they aren't slammed at all, in fact I had to raise it up when I got the wheels. I also had to do a LOT of fender rolling and pounding. In hindsight I should have gone with a 255/30/19 as they are a lower overall diameter. I wanted as much rubber under my car as I could get that's why I got the 9.5s and 245s (after these wear out I'm getting at least the 255/30s, maybe 265s since I've done so much fender work) but if you are going for that stanced look you could run a smaller tire like a 215/35/19 or something and it should fit just fine. Personally I think 19s look plenty big.

In that case a 225/35/19 might be a better choice. With the 235s you wont be much smaller than the 245s I have and I cant say for sure that they wouldn't rub. There is almost half an inch difference in over all diameter between the 225s and 235s over a 1/4 inch difference in width.

235/35/19 Nankang NS-20 (Couldn't pass up the steal I got)

I'm off to a fast start!
The reason I opted for the 235 is because on my current car which just sold. I ran a 225/35/20 on a 20x8.5 up front and the tire is VERY stretched. I am good with that on that car because its lowered 3" and you can barely see any tire at all on the arch of the fender. On this car I will not be doing coils or air ride as this is my second car and daily driver. I am reserving my extreme for the toy. With a conservative drop tire stretch will look horrible and a 235 will still have a VERY mild stretch to it but I would argue not really a stretch at that point. Depending on how it sits I may even add some wheel spacers to kick them out a touch more. I am pretty confident with the high offset I will be okay..... Do you see why and what I am trying to do now?

Cool.
I really dislike the design of the Proteus wheels (not to offend anyone or reduce your chances to sell. And I realize I'm a sacrilegious guy who radically lowers X-Types and puts (gasp) Porsche and Mercedes wheels on them).
Since we aren't PM'ing this go around. I would say to stick to your native ET42 without spacers. The first problem is these cars have studs which limit you to a 5mm spacer on your Coventry/OEM wheels (with mag-style lug seats) - and for kids watching from home with aftermarket wheels using conical seat lugs, you cannot run any spacers... unless you go to a size spacer/adapter of 20mm or more. That will essentially put the surface of the spacer beyond the ends of the OEM studs. Finding longer aftermarket studs may be possible, but I haven't been successful.
The second thing with this car is that unlike most European cars, the front and rear wheel spacing to fender on non-staggered wheel fitments is surprising good out of box. With other cars, you often need a 10-15mm spacer in back to even things out with where the front wheel sits. Not this car.

Thanks a ton exepat.... Information greatly appreciated. It's very difficult to tell from photos if I will need spacers. I was debating on going with et35 but I figured I would need a very stretched 225/35/19 on the wheel then. If I was doing coilovers I would be game but with just lowering springs it's a bit unnecessary and can look a bit "half assed" in my opinion to run tire stretch on a car with improper suspension for such an aggressive fitment.

I got what you're getting at, but for some reason I didn't think about the fact that my wheels are an inch wider than the wheels you're getting, and yours wouldn't stick out as far as mine. As for stretch, I've always been the guy that puts the widest tires I think will fit on my cars, I think my x type has the most "stretch" of any car I've had with the 9.5s and 245s, so I know nothing about that. Be sure to post some pics once you get them on.
And Jeremy, since you're "here", I must say, I came across your car when I first got mine and was inspired by what you've done and read up on your stanceworks thread thinking; "I hope I can build something close to that good some day". btw do those Porsche wheels fit without adaptors?

yeah that's a pretty big stretch, I used to have a 2006 mustang and had 20x10s all around with 275/35/20s and thought that was almost too much stretch haha. I actually have a set of 5x108 to 5x114.3 adaptors just sitting in a box, I got them to see if the 18x9 cobra R wheels I had/have on my truck would fit but since the adaptors are so big they stuck out too much. The wheels had a 25 offset though. I'm keeping the adaptors just in case I come across a set of high offset 5x114.3s.
