wheel bearing hum, now a wobble!
2002 X-Type 3.0
So I procrastinated getting my wheel bearing replaced so long that now the whole wheel wobbles.
I've called around and parts dept's have been telling me that you have to purchase the whole bearing / hub assembly.
Now that my wheel is wobbling I think I may need this but if my problem were still just the bearing is this a cash grab or does the hub get ruined when the bearing goes bad?
Also, posts on replacing the bearing, with specialty tools, have kept me from jumping in and doing this myself... is replacing the hub/bearing assembly an easier job?
And finally, if it's not any easier. Does $490 sound fair for this job and/or does anyone know a good mechanic in the Portland, OR area? and yes, I did check the PNW forum.

I recently had a front one done at a local shop. They first put in a generic bearing which threw the ABS codes/light. I bought a Jag bearing off JPLV for half the price they charged me and had them put it in when it was delivered. Problem solved. Make sure you get a Jag bearing the first time, should be around $45. The parts and labor for a front wheel bearing at an independent shop should not be expensive at all.
I haven't yet had an issue with either of the rears so I'm not sure what the procedure is.
