Wheel Center Caps
I've got a 2004 X-type 3.0. Over the past 6 months, I've lost 3 of the 17" Cayman wheel center caps. Today, I was washing the wheels, and two of the caps fell off while I was drying them off. It seems that the plastic clips on the caps break off and only the minute amount of axle grease that leaks past the seals then holds them on. I'm tired of making the 20+ mile trip through LA traffic to get to the only dealer (Rusnak, Pasadena, CA) close enough to get them replaced under warranty.
Has anyone else had this same problem with breaking clips, and if so how did you solve it? Also, is there a site on the internet (outside of Ebay, I'm tired of bidding then waiting to see if I won) where I can get replacements reasonably?
Thanks, Niel

RE: Wheel Center Caps
Hello Niel,
That doesn't sound like a common problem. My 2005 has been through some rough roads, many car washes and a few tire rotations with no signs of the caps breaking or falling off.
Do you have aftermarket wheels? If not, on your next set of replacement center pieces i would use some silicon glue around the cap and press it in place.
Good luck

Same thing happens to me every time I visit the Jaguar dealership. Often wonder if it's because of rough handling -- or them swapping out my good caps for broken parts I'll then have to replace @ $20 a pop.

You might have something there!
A few years ago we stopped at a dealer out west to have the right front tire checked, I believe that they installed a used rim/new tire on that side. A few months later as I pulled them off to wash the insides, the front right rim had a different inside color then the other 3.

Yes it is a common problem. I have had 2 sets of wheels and all had at least one tab broken except for one, and It broke when I pushed the cap off and I was careful because I knew they broke. They are brittle thin plastic tabs. Plastic looses elasticity with age and heat and UV sun. The wheels get all of these. They will hold fine with three tabs and ok with just two, but mine had clear silicone holding some of them in.

I put the XJ8 wheel centers on my car. Looks much better as it has the raised face cat on the emblem. I think I paid like $40 for all 4. They are also a much heavier construction. So, should solve your tab issue too.
On a side note, I find that putting a wrap or two of electrical tape over the tabs will help stiffen up the tabs and also help a cap remain in place if it likes to wiggle around. Please keep in mind that if you do this, it will make the cap stick really well and I find to get the caps off in the future you have to remove the wheel and then press the cap out from the inside of the rim.

Finding one or two of the plastic 'tabs' broken on the centre cap is quite common.
Usually happens when removing them rather than in use. It's so regular that eBay UK always has plenty aftermarket replacements listed in green, red or black. Today I've found 42 listings.
Over time the cap can stick to the wheel with road dirt. Rotating the cap to free it before pressing it out reduces the risk of breaking a 'tab'.

Got these from a dealer in SC for $16 each. Had had ones (like these http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jaguar-Alloy...item35c3242006) with new style from ebay before but they were crap and did not last long. The OEM on the other hand are very nice.

This site automatically places your highest bid seconds before the auction closes without pushing the price up in the mean time. I imagine this is what other bidders are doing to you. However you only pay the price required to win the auction. I think you get a few free credits to begin with then it charges about 10c per bid after that.
I place the 'buy it now' price listed elsewhere. If you're outbid, just 'buy it now' elsewhere. That's what I tend to do.

My 2004 X-Type Sport came with the BBS 18" wheels. All the center caps had to be replace once or twice under warranty. I bought a second set of Jaguar OEM wheels for winter and have not had one problem with the center caps in those. I think the BBS center is not the same diameter as the OEM & there-in lies the problem. I just put my BBS wheels back on & one of the centers is missing! Darn it. I still have 4 more on my 16" wheels.
I esniped the wheels of of Ebay with new Bridgestone tires for only $450! Nobody else had bid. I got lucky!

Received my Ebay center cap today. It's an OEM cap & will look good in the hole currently in the center of my 18" BBS wheel. Got it for only $18 & $3 shipping from a seller in Columbus, Ohio who is a few bucks cheaper than one of the Internet Jaguar dealership parts sellers.
Update: Stuck the cap in & it went in without any issue. Looks much better!
