whirring sound from middle of dash
I called Jenkins Jag and they told me very common. It is an asparator fan for the climate control system. They told me it gets dirty after a while and makes a little noise. You cannot hear it while driving, just when parked and ignition off. I asked if this would drain the battery and he also said they have never had that happen unless the car sits for a long time. He stated that with all the electronics on today's cars that all will be dead in a couple of months with no use. He told me it would be a simple fix, 29.00 part and an hours labor. Have any of you run into this and if so did you fix it yourself? He told me that even a new one would hum a bit. It is not that loud but... I do like things neat and tidy.

there is a little vent on the dash to the right of the steering wheel (LHD) and you'll hear a slight whir when you first climb in the vehicle. I'm pretty sure it isn't on constantly and is triggered by opening the door, Thermo would know for sure but I doubt it, I'm thinking it would wear out the bearing if it were.

That sound is completely normal and you would still hear it with a brand new unit.
I'm surprised they failed to mention that it turns itself on and off whenever the door is opened or closed. It will run for about 45 minutes after you've exited the car and then automatically shut down.

X-Type dash aspirator fan noise
The small climate control aspirator fan is somewhat noisy; I know how and why the fan operates but what I would like to know is *how this is removed from the dash for cleaning or replacement*, and does anyone have the Jaguar part number for this fan unit? The car in question is a 2005 X-Type Sportwagon. As a matter of interest, we have two 2002 X-Types and the dash fan on those cars is NOT linked to the door handles, nor is it on when the climate control is not on. A much more satisfactory system: no extraneous and constant noises!
But the question again: how do you remove this unit from the dash?

Because most fridges have a switch that is pressed down by the door when it is closed... So all you have to do is press the switch and see if the light turns off.

Thanks for the responses. I can now definitley say that both our manual shift 2002 cars operate this way: when you open the door - nothing. Ignition ON, the aspirator fans come on whether the climate control is On or OFF. (Perhaps the manual and automatic cars are wired differently). The reason I did not think the fans in these cars worked without the climate control on is that the fans are virtually SILENT. Your really have to put your ear to the small grille to hear them. In contrast, the fan in the 05 Sportwagon is quite audible and at an irregular pitch. So it looks like solving the problem will require replacing the fan. Thanks again,
