Why is it so hard to sell our cars

Honestly I love this Jag just as much, but coming from a completely different perspective. It has classic good looks, a superb interior, floats down the highway, and has a certain charm to it that no newer BMW can come close to matching. As a regular car, it's brilliant - comfortable, quiet, and just sporty enough to make everyday driving fun when you want it to be.
Another thing I noticed, and would like to know if anyone else notices this too, is that I feel strangely calm whenever I'm driving the X-Type. It doesn't seem to be a road-rage inducing car. When people cut me off in other cars, my blood pressure goes through the roof. In the Jag, I just gently put on the brakes and don't even think twice about it. Anyone else get this effect from their X-Type? Is it the "old dame" effect? lol.
My SO and I test drove the competition (C-class, 3-series, A4, TSX - which is VERY LOUD by the way) and nothing felt as nice as the X-Type. Looks are subjective, but we felt that the others didn't look nearly as good, either. And don't even get me started on all these new ugly Jags! Anyway, let's just say that if I wanted to cruise to Vegas at 90 instead of 160 in the M3, I'd definitely take the Jag every time. Hypothetically speaking, of course. By the way, I noticed your car when I first signed up, and it's gorgeous! Great job!

Just did a quick search on Craigslist in my area for the 2002 Jag X Type, 2002 BMW 3 series and Mercedes C Class:
I picked 2002 only because that is what the original posters car is (as far as I know).
Observations:
X Type resale values are lower than BMW, but on par with the C Class (in this area)
Anyway, here is one data point on relative market for these types of cars...

Like someone said, not just Jags.
I'm shopping for a late C4 Corvette. Prices on them have taken a huge hit too. This is good for me, bad for sellers. But the NADA and KBB prices haven't adjusted evidently. They are no where near actual selling prices. But lots of people still holding out for what they read there but not selling.
I think the problem is there are so many different little nitch markets and not that many with disposable funds for toys or high end cars. And people still flush with cash tend to buy newer.
Plus it would seem every Tom Dick & Harry has a horror story to relate about a Jaguar.

What a car is listed at and what it actually sells for are two different things, especially on Craigslist from a private seller where a lot of people are looking for the deal of the century. Would be interesting to know what a lot of those cars actually sold for. It all boils down to what someone is willing to pay at a given time and what the buyer will accept at a given time. Kelly Blue Book and NADA guides are fine, but they are guides. You mentioned earlier that a dealer offered you $6000 at one time and then $8000 later at the same dealer for your trade in. I would bet that those two numbers were factored in as part of a deal two buy two different cars and probably at two different price points. So unless they will actually negotiate the trade in seperate from the price of the car you would be buying, that number doesn't mean much. It's all what the bottom line number is. If they take less off the car they are selling they can give you more for your trade in and vice versa. Dealers are professionals and they won't give you any more for your car than they think it's worth to them. So, I wouldn't get too hung up on the trade in if the bottom line number that you will actually have to pay them is what you think is fair.

Probably because anybody who is thinking of buying an X Type googles something along the lines of "X Type reliability" and is automatically directed to the hundreds of threads on THIS forum of people pissing and moaning about a check engine light or a gearbox fault code or a strange noise coming from somewhere or the smell they made that scared their girlfriend's cat..... Most people would take one look at all of these threads and say "Screw that, I'm getting a 3 series." Simple as that.

My personal experience has been that the x type is no more expensive to own than any of my previous cars - C280, TL, 325...if anything the 325 had in general the most expensive and frequent repairs. We still have a Subaru as well - 07 Forester. Very low maintenance, but it's a tinny rattle trap. We just assume it's supposed to be that way and don't bother. The pick up is getting worse, it shakes if you go faster than 70 and the brakes are mushy. But we just expect it to be that way! Some of it is expectations
Hey, what about the c6 vettes, theres some real cheap ones in my area too. ANd other cars are still insanly expensive. Theres a guy who want 19 grand for a 06 gto ( ls2 motor) and he wont budge ont he price. Its been ont eh classified for over 3 months now

Why not sell it to your neighbor? That way you would kill two birds with one stone: Your neighbor won't glare at you and your will be out from under your car. Seeems like a win-win to me.

That's like saying all Jaguar owners are old farts and retirees... Which was my ex girlfriend's initial reaction when I bought my car. Needless to say, I got a new girlfriend- a BETTER girlfriend!
