Wonderful News for this new owner
I've owned the 2004 X-Type 3.0 Jaguar (Black) for 4 days now, some minor issues but VERY pleased with this car.
I will need the following:
New headliner fabric since it is saging a little - $250
"Crows Feet" on hood - new paint job - $800
Extra FOB key - $300
Total = $1350.00
Owning this Jaguar = PRICELESS!!
It had one previous owner and a little less then 55,000 miles. Found out that BlacksTire in New Bern, NC has kept up the maintance on this car since day 1. The manager, Wes, said he knows the car well and will show me the maintinance history. He has also owned the X-type and it never gave him any problems, he gave it to his mother and he bought another one for his wife.
Thanks to the help of this forum, it's giving me a peace of mind to know what questions to ask and make sure to get with a mechanic that not only knows about the car but also owns one.
I'm a woman and can't do the maintance myself so it makes me feel more at ease to know that I will have a knowledgable place to take my baby.

Newbie, welcome to the club. As you have found, we are a wealth of knowledge here and will help you out as much as we can. As for working on the car, you would be surprised as to what we can talk you into trying. LMAO. The headliner should be something that you can do yourself unless the whole thing is coming down. All you need is some 3M Upholstery glue (available at any auto parts store for around $10) and then I recommend some masking tape and newspaper (tape and paper is to protect the surrounding items like glass, rubber, etc). Then all you have to do is to access between the fabric and the headliner backing, spray in some of the glue, then starting at the back edge, pat down the material against the headliner backing and keep patting it down until you hit the edge. The big trick with this is not to pull on the fabric, but to simply push the fabric straight up.
As for the hood and key, unfortunately, those are things that most people have to go somewhere else to get fixed.
Enjoy the new car and if you have any more questions, we are here to help. Besides, I'm sure with a little bit of persuasion, we can get you under the car, oil up to your elbows, doing things like an oil change and whatnot. He he he he he he he. Oil is hell on nail polish. LMAO.

newbie, changing the oil is easy. If you ever make it up near DC, let me know. You can stop by my place and we'll get you taken care of. That way you can see what needs to be done and that way when you go to do it yourself, you will know what goes where.
As for fixing the headliner, give it a whirl. Having a shop put in a whole new headliner isn't going to run that much more (sounds like that was what they were doing anyways). What is the worst thing that is going to happen, you make it a little more difficult for the guy at the upholstery shop to put in a headliner. Oh boo hoo. he may not be a happy camper, but at the same time, you are paying him to do something for you. He has no room to complain.
