Disco, as much as it probably pains you to see what I am about to write, but "Go get the code read". I just had the CEL come on my truck. It was running fine, nothing of any significance going on. All it turned out to be was the emissions code (P0446) stating that it couldn't get a vacuum on the gas tank. This is normally caused by the seal on the gas cap leaking. Oh no, not that. LMAO. So, get the code read and lets take it from there. Since the car is running fine, odds are it is something really small. So, don't fret.

I had the "amber engine light blues" last weekend shut the car down, etc. called the dealer (please, please, please confirm through other sources before following this verbal second hand advice as it is contrary to my instinct) with my model 2003 xk8 coupe, they indicated "If the car is not experiencing driveability problems and there ins no secondary warning indication, the car can be driven safely in for service."
It turned out to be a rather expensive module covered under warranty but an contrary to my instinct of reaction to check engine lights that I passed on to others here (shut it down now!, tow it home and find problem).
I do not know if that advise holds for other models.
hope that helps,

Disco, the CEL is going to remain on for a period of time after the fault has been cleared. The CEL will remain on for 5 complete starts/stops of the engine. On the 6th start of the engine, as long as the fault has been clear for the entire time the 5 starts/stops has occurred, the light will then go off. But, the code will be left inside the computer. So, you may have very well fixed the issue by tightening the gas cap, but until you have started the vehicle 6 times, the light will remain on.

thanx thermo, ill keep at her, some interesting stuff happened regaring ur cars, you no how a litle while ago i was taking about the ls7 x type, yeah i saw it today, and it was destroyed, making funny nioses, the back rims were cracked, and it looed like the hood melted, so this is what happens when u a give a little compact excutive car, a 600+hp rating, when it could barley hand 194. hmm, just food for thought

Disco, places like Napa and Autozone should have a scanner that you can borrow. Then you can read the codes for free. The plug is under the dash. Save yourself the money and go from there.
As for getting the light to clear, when you say you did 5-6 cycles, was that getting the engine up to temp, or was that simply turning the ignition switch to RUN then back to off? The computer needs to obtain the P1000 code (all major systems good) code before it will count the cycle as being good. This takes about 3 minutes of the motor running to reach the P1000 status.
