RE: X TYPE 2.2 Diesel auto for 2008
It'll be fantastic news.........be great if they offer it in the states too for you guys as its an auto.........We know how you guys love your autoboxes!
You'll also get the chance to see just how good the diesel engine really is in the X for performance as well as economy.

I have a funny feeling tjhough Caddie that it won't be offered stateside!
There seems to be the opinion that you guys don't like the diesels, probably cos your gas is so cheap too I suspect!
The only thing that may swing it is the fact that its Auto!
Time will tell

Yeah you're right.....I think you guys have an outdated opinion of diesel......( I mean that in a nice way although it doesn't sound it ...lol)
I think it was Aquill who said that its only really used on trucks n the like!
Maybe cos the fuel prices over here are unbelievably high we have just grown accustomed to it over the years, and generally in Europe as a whole. Strange really I guess when America is usually at the forefront of these kinda things[&:]

not all of us have that outdated opinion, im a truck mechanic in the service and love the abuse a diesel can take! I would gladly take a diesel xtype (or any jag) if it was offered here. modern diesels are very quite and quite powerful compared to the ones when i was a kid (vw golf, mk 1 when i was a kid) But too bad people here have closed minds. Diesel is about .40 cheaper then unleaded premium in ny anyway.

Well said somekidz.........although I can see you being like me...lol
Get the car and the first thing you'd be thinkin about is the extra horses and torques that would come from an ECU upgrade on a diesel.............Much better gains than on a petrol equivalent.
Maybe takin it from around 160 bhp to nearer 195 maybe nudging 200 even ( roughly speaking )
BUT - Its not the bhp its the torque thats the magic factor giving awesome pulling power in every gear and still gettin like anywhere between 40 - 50 mpg dependin on how you drive!!!

RE: X TYPE 2.2 Diesel auto for 2008
all true, but the main reason diesels for most marques aren't sold here is not the public perception; after all VW and Mercedes-Benz sold diesels here for decades, and MB still does. The big problem is emissions standards. EU and US standards emphasize different parts and restrictions in emissions. The EU is generally much more strict and regulatory, with the exception on particulates coming out of diesel exhausts, where US (California standards, which will be adopted by most states later on) standards are more demanding. That's why Merc and others are working on technology ("Bluetec" etc) to reduce it to acceptable levels here as well. And, the diesel fuel itself in the US had too much sulfur in it until this year, when the infrastructure finally delivered on the government's initiative to have low-sulfur diesel available here as in EU. Toyota and others also announced diesel plans for the US in the coming 3-4 years. Also, the diesel is indirectly subsidized (through lower taxes, etc) in the EU, which makes it even more popular in addition to the already discussed benefits of diesels. The US does not seem willing to do that, which will mean the advantages of buying a diesel here are reduced, even with the better fuel economy, overall life of the engine, torque etc. Right now, in NY state where I live diesel is sold for about the same as regular gasoline. For the average buyer who is not aware of the basic goodness of modern diesels, it will be a decision between more mpg versus several thousand dollars less at the moment of buying the car, since diesels are sold with a price premium. I have a feeling that it will take a bit more time to catch on here, beyond the know-it-all snobs like us, lol.

I'm a big fan of diesels. I drive a Freightliner Sprinter at work. It has a 5 cyl MB diesel in it. Its real quiet (sounds like a four banger gas engine), Blows no smoke, has plenty of power, gets 22 MPG, and currently has 349000 miles on it. SOLD !
