hi, im new to the forums and i just got a 2002 jag xtype 2.5xtype 5sp. it has 92k miles. i notice at around 2-3k rpm depending wat gear im in, theres a knock or ticking noise. there is no tick in idle. i would guess its a knock any ideas? can i drop the oil pan and fix a rod bearing or sumthing? my friend was telling me sumthing about just dropping the oil pan and it might be pretty easy to solve for a mechanic. any info would be great thanks.

 

No, dropping the oil pan is most certainly not easy. One of the bolts is hidden under the transfer case. To get the pan off you have to either remove the transfer case (difficult and expensive), or drill a hole through the edge of the case (difficult and with lots of failure possibilities including ruining the transfer case), or bent an open-end wrench in such a way as to reach the hidden bolt (difficult but do'able).

However, before doing anything you need to better identify where the noise is coming from. Will it do it in park? If so have someone step on the gas while you're standing beside the car with the hood open. Listen carefully for the noise and try to identify where it seems to be coming from.
