Thank you, Daxter! I really appreciate the guidance. I have two clarifying questions for you after reading the instructions:
1. Is there a way for those of us without a Jaguar Approved Diagnostic System to get around the requirement to check the fluid level when the fluid temperature is between 30 degrees and 40 degrees celcius? In your experience, is there a predictable period of time (e.g., 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes for example) that it typically takes the transmission fluid to reach the right temperature range?
2. Does the car have to be raised perfectly level for the drain, refill, and fluid level checks? I'm assuming yes, but wanted to get a sense if whether following this procedure is possible by raising only the front or the rear of the vehicle.
Thanks, and all the best.

well there is no lift in this world that would raise ur car crooked, if there were i would be more worried about my life. Lifts compensate for themselves and raise the car perfectly leveled otherwise u should put the car down and call a lift mechanic. That being said, i don't use the jaguar diagnostic system. I use an infrared thermometer and aim it on the pan. BUT i am like SUPER PICKY ABOUT EVERYTHING! some other techs just let it warm up and when its warm they re check and is just as good as my procedure. I know i could just let it warm up but that's just who i am... by the book jag tech. so u could just let it warm up u just didn't hear it from me lolz ![Big Grin](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Best of luck!

Using an infrared thermometer's a great idea! I already have one, so I can aim it at the pan as well. Out of curiosity, do you compensate at all for the fact that you're not directly measuring the temperature of the fluid, or do you just wait for the infrared thermometer to read 30 to 40 degrees celcius while it's pointed at the pan?
My question on raising the car level had to do with the fact that most of us weekend home mechanics don't have access to a lift at all. :-) I do all of the work on my car by driving it up on ramps, or by using a jack to lift up one corner of the car. From what you're describing, it sounds like the car has to definitely be raised level to complete this procedure. No biggie - I'll just have to figure out a way to do that. Thanks again!

about the infrared... the first time i did it i had someone actually look at the tool because i wanted to see if the temp sensor for the fluid was working, and it seemed pretty accurate. in fact i trust the infrared before the sensor.
About the car being levelled, yes u want it to be levelled to check the fluid, but u also want it to be levelled if u r under it

In regards to the fluid level check: I can't imagine that on a transmission that is a)not leaking and b) operating properly, it is necessary to check the level with that terrible procedure if all one is trying to do is change the fluid out as a matter of maintenance. It is my understanding that tranny fluid does not go down unless there is a leak; so draining and refilling with the same amount should be fine(?)
That's more of a question than a statement.
