Default X Type Catalytic Converter Question

My 2002 X Type is throwing 430 code and O2 sensor replacement hasn't helped. It looks like my car has a California compliant system, does this mean a replacement converter must be California compliant? Or can I go with the regular one?

Also any recommendations on a source for a replacement part that won't cost $1400 as quoted by Jag dealer?

thanks,
Rick

Rick,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X-Type forum.

Members here with the same model will be able to advise.

A replacement converter must be California compliant only if you live in California. To be on the safe-side, check with your city's vehicle inspection station for current info.

Rick, each region has different requirements for cat replacement. Check with your local muffler shops and see what they say. It may be that in order to get a non-california cat installed, you will have to replace both cats at the same time. I would recommend that anyways so you maintain even flow side to side in the engine.

As for alternatives, do some looking around. You might be able to find either a cheap lightly used unit or I seem to recall that there are some aftermarket (don't recall a name though).

You can find way cheaper cat converters on ebay and it is legal in California.

Here's one for less than $500.

But before you buy cat converters, make sure it is really what you need. How does your car run? If there are no performance issues, you might want to try an o2 sensor spacer to put after both cats. Sometimes that might clear those codes.

Thanks for the feedback. I was seeing misfire codes so decided to replace the plugs and coils. It runs great when warm and just a bit lumpy for first minute or two when outside temp goes into the teens. I'm going to replace IMT valve o rings for good measure. I've replaced short manifold hose previously. I've debated o2 spacer as light is intermittent, but I'm not sure it will do more damage than good. Can I use one on front side ( where light is) and not on back? The back looks impossible to get to with limited space for one. Any thoughts on this?

Try an o2 sensor spacer or de-fouler. It goes between the o2 sensor and cat converter. It worked for me when I got the p0430 code and it cost like $10.

If your car runs bad when its cold, check your car for a vacuum leak and also try cleaning your MAF sensor.

Default Solution

Realizing that if I were to replace converter I might as well replace down stream sensor. That was it. I had read so much saying it would not be the sensor I delayed replacing it, so I'm reminded always chech sensor first.

In my diagnosis efforts I also learned I have intake manifold leaks, I did the old cigar smoke into vacuum line test. I causes the car to run just a bit rough when temp gets below about 20 degrees. I did change IMT valve o rings and am thinking about the manifold as 97% of the time there is no issue.

If your going to replace your intake gaskets. You can get them at autozone. Just tell them you have the Lincoln ls 3.0 .Same thing as ours but about 60 bucks cheaper.

As fate would have it, the 430 code is back. I am biting the bullet and will be changing the front converter as soon as it arrives next week. I'll let you know what happens,.
